I think wild horses should be free to run wild. I don't believe in any fencing-in of wild animals.
America needs to get beyond its Disneyland Fancy concerning wild horses and wild burros.
www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/features/environment/wild-horses-part-one/ Might make note of the death threats against the author and his family. In addition, "The expense of holding all these horses has crippled the BLM’s wild horse budget to the point where it’s spending two- thirds of its entire budget, nearly $50 million in 2016, warehousing horses in short-term and long-term pastures. Go beyond politics and check to see what the National Academic of Science ecologists recommend. I could not locate the expenses for 2017 or I would have quoted them.

A very good link Barn Owl, thanks. I wish I could have included it in my op.
They have some pretty strict rules about the adoption procedure. There are lots of specifications to be met by the adoptee; not just anyone can drop in and get a horse.
Why is there not enough wild pasture resources for these horses? Ask the cattle farmers. There was enough when there were millions of bison, why not now? I guess if we still had bison roaming the west then we would want to kill them off to make room for the cattle farmers. Not against the cattle industry, rode a horse every day for a while on a cattle operation. As noted above we need to get over our Disney image of these animals and treat them like any other of the many other animals we use as food. The rest of the world has. Short of that tell the cattle industry to suck it up and use only what is left from what is needed by these beautiful beasts. To that we could add the needs of the recovering bison herds, etc.

You are correct and the adoption numbers have been in decline for the past 15 years. BLM's warehousing of these "surplus" animals does not appear to be a sustainable solution. As I stated, it is a complex problem.

Those who hold the rights to run cattle on public lands are indeed major players in this conflict.
Very interesting and good shots, but it's kinda sad! I think they should be left free to run and be happy.

Thanks Sue, I think there should be a place for them to run free on our public lands, but like much in our lives today....it's complicated!
This would be a GREAT cause, compared to the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ wasted on worthless ventures our congressmen/women undertake to send "PORK"
home so they can get reelected!
