I tried posting this yesterday, but something messed up. So I'll try again today. Both of these pictures came from our recent trip to Sunset Beach, NC. The animal looks a little like a rabbit, but has a tail like a rat (best we can tell). It may very well be a common animal we just don't recognize when we see it. The other picture is of birds that run away from the incoming water and then chase after it when it recedes again. Quite amusing to watch.
The Animal
The Birds
I think the birds might be Sandlings.
The animal may be a baby ground hog.

I was going to say a mouse, they have tails like rats don't they?
Looks like yg. field mouse, and Sanderlings
Sandpipers.
They eat what the wave brings in that why it looks like
they are running from the wave
On our beaches on Hilton Head Is, SC we have a street named "Spotted Sandpiper" named after the birds that seem to scurry away and towars the waves. That is my guess. Details of the feathers are not clear. The SS wings are longer than their body, they about the size of a sparrow.

If the animal was anywhere near fresh water I would say its a Muskrat.
How big is the animal? Don't think it is a muskrat at least not like the ones we have here. The head isn't right.
He is probably some kind of rat. Maybe a Marsh rat. With out some way to know the size it is hard to tell. Marsh rats are also good swimmers and are 7 to 12 inches long.

Could be it is hard to tell without something to tell what size he is.
