TheDman you have been lucky then. I would NEVER risk a photo trip without a backup camera, even if just a point-and-shoot. And I have hiked around Scottish Highlands, Appalachian trial, Rockies, etc. and ALWAYS have a backup camera, for my professional as well as personal work. Cheers

Have you needed it? Had a body ever died on you? I've never had one die, film or digital, in my 20 years of shooting. Closest I've ever come was in Iceland after shooting Gjlufrufoss... like being hit with a fire hose. Camera stopped working for half a day until it dried out.

As for hiking in Scotland, have you done the West Highland Way? Most beautiful trail on earth. I've done that twice, as well as the Great Glen Way and the South West Coast Path at the bottom of England. If you can do that one from Lulworth Cove to Swanage in one day lugging two bodies and 3 lenses, you're tougher than me. 😀

I’ve been shooting for more than fifty years, and I’ve had three bodies fail catastrophically - a Nikon F (mirror locked), Pentax Spotmatic (shutter speeds all slowed irregularly), and Nikon D3200 (SD card reader). All three were close to home, and not at a once in a lifetime event. I was able to fudge the Nikon repair in the field but the two other failures were fatal.

Who was it that said, “It’s better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it”?

There’s a reason those tough old combat photographers generally had at least two hanging from their necks.

Thank you all...I will get a backup..I've traveled recently without one and have been lucky, but always thought I could use my husband's Olympus ( first gen mirrorless) or iphone, but I am not really happy with either choice. And I think a cropped sensor makes the most sense..kind of double duty..back up and extra reach! The trip isn't for a while, so I will wait and see what new cameras Canon will be announcing soon, and then hope that older modeles will be more heavily discounted...maybe I can then justify both camera and lens :-)

I will contribute another major thought to this thread:

MURPHY!!!!

He had an office in my classroom for 34 years and he was in my company in Vietnam.

Don't forget to check the Canon Store refurbished department regularly, things come and go fast and around major holidays they have their best sales which sometimes are only for 24-72 hours.

I am planning a trip to Namibia, and currently shoot with a canon 5DM4. My longest lens is 70-300L. I was thinking about upgrading to the 100-400L II ( and adding a 1.4 extender) and then I thought about getting a second ( back up ) camera body, maybe the Canon 7DM2 instead. That, with it’s crop factor, would give me almost the same reach as the 100-400 with a 1.4 teleconverter. I could then have a camera with a landscape lens, and one with “wildlife” lens mounted. So, here is the question..How many of you travel with a back up camera, and is it the same model or type as your primary, or would you travel with one camera and a longer reach lens? Any advice would be appreciated. I am trying to make a purchasing decision that will serve me well not only this trip, but for future travels as well.

A backup camer/lens is a good idea, but the backup doesn't have to be expensive as its just for emergencies.. I shoot weddings and special events and have a back up because I need to get the shot because I am getting paid...

Lots of discussion around weight and cost.
The weight is incremental and the cost relative to the cost of the safari is also incremental.
Get a cheap crop body ...70D,80D preferable as the buttons, menu touchscreen are very similar to the 5DmkIV so no brain cramps during your run ' n ' gun moments :-)

I shoot lots of sports and can seamlessly drop bodyA, grab bodyB , shoot with no hesitation.

...and not switching lenses is a true blessing (dust and convenience). 2 bodies on me all the time in that situation...
