Just joining after stumbling across an ad for the group a few days ago. I'm an amateur photographer, professional Electrical and Cyber Engineer and masters degree in software engineering focusing on computer graphics and rendering. So I have a good understanding of the physics and optics of photography but have come to realize that my style and composition is not overly creative, so I'm always trying to improve that. My career in the Air Force took me to a lot of fascinating places that I
blogged about, but now that we're settled down in San Antonio, Texas, I don't have as much interesting photo opportunities as I did and I haven't really touched the blog since then.
My more serious SLR camera is a Canon EOS Rebel XTi, but I don't use it too much since I lost my CF card reader other is Canon PowerShot SX30 IS. However, I recently got a Google Pixel phone that has a remarkable camera, with a sensor that surpasses my other cameras, so I just use it unless I need low-light, time-lapse or telephoto shots.
My favorite photo site still remains
Flickr, but not sure how it will be going forward as Yahoo fades from memory and SmugMug takes it over.

Welcome. I hesitate to make unsolicited suggestions to someone with a resume like yours but have you experimented with the apps for your Google phone? If not you might find that there are apps that give you all the functionality of a dslr including total manual control that facilitates low light shots, other features like zoom, special features like hdr, timed exposure, time lapse, etc. Enjoy the forum and don't overlook the shooting opportunities of the coast to the east and the "hill country" to the west, Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, the river walk, the old missions, especially all the colorful "goat ropers," and "vaqueros," male and female, etc...
...what about all the birds, not to mention all them stinkin' bugs you could macro.
Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you with us, and absolutely nothing wrong with using a cell phone camera. They work, and you nearly always have it with you!
Welcome to UHH Neal, glad you joined us. Post some of your work when you can.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.
