Scottsdale is so fortunate to have a fabulous city railroad park with live steam trains running throughout the park. For us the recently completed model layout building/museum is a highlight of any visit. Newest addition is the Z gauge layout. Here is a photo of my wife who was allowed to enter into the middle of the layout. Trains in operation of all gauges, from scale to toytrains.

The Z gauge got my attention several years ago. A train shop had one of the German made "layout" in a brief/attache case for $600. Boy was I tempted to buy that just so I could set it up on my desk and play with it while my students took tests.
But sanity struck (also my wallet whimpered a lot while I was looking at it) and I didn't do it. But it would have been fun. Well except for the trying to get the students to take their tests instead of bugging me to let them play with it.

We were fortunate to buy the entire stock of Marklin Z gauge at a local Phoenix camera store! They sold virtually nothing (a camera store after all with an owner who went to Germany to buy cameras and came back with model trains) and we got retail value $12,000 for $3000. Most is gone but we still have two layouts, one a tiny deal display, just a small oval and a larger commercially made layout with two ovals, and a few switches. Over the years sold the numerous train sets and individual items so down to just a small inventory of locos and rolling stock including the Zepplin, Orient Express, and Santa Fe and Chessie American diesel sets. Fortunately my 30 year old son drops by to maintain and run the layout...my 75 year old eyes can't even tell if the items are on the track or not.

One of those head bands with a flip up magnifier (some have lights) should help you.
And it will contribute to your "mad scientist" image.

It is an amazing place. The photo only shows half of the building. There is another huge O gauge layout to the North (Z gauge in the middle of HO and N gauge trains, I believe). In any event there are three separate huge layouts in the building. Equally of interest are spectacular dioramas of miniature homes, rooms, hotel, ships built by a Dr. Hoffman who bequeathed his work to the Railroad Park.
