Whig Hill dates to the Revolutionary War and is located near Gaffney, SC. It was vandalized about 30 years ago or so by a bunch of young rednecks and the road to the area is now blocked off with a heavy chain. Around 1999 I was able to hike in with a friend and we photographed it. If I am successful I will post a couple of photographs.
These photos show some of the damage done by the young idiots, who were stupid enough to drive into town scattering pieces of gravestones around and loudly proclaiming what they had done. Needless to say they were drunk when they committed this atrocity. They destroyed the original marker for the young Confederate soldier. Today he has a new one.
The last photo of the lot serves to remind us as to how we treat our children.
"Lest We Forget".
Should Memorial Day ever be considered as "happy"?
Lot of neglected cemeteries ... loss of history.
He was a really young soldier

Most soldiers are really young. I was 18 when I enlisted.

Yeah, he was actually about 22; young to have to die for your country. He was killed in 1862 while the South was still winning so his body was recovered and sent home for burial. After the north gained dominance southern dead were just dumped in a mass grave and had dirt shoveled over them or as at Gettysburg a little dirt was shoveled over them where they lay.
