On the Vietnam wall there is a name in the spot where I would have been. I was packing my desk to go on outpost duty as a squad leader guarding a pass when our section cartographer/draftsman/architect stepped out of the back room and said he had all his work done for the next 10 days and he wanted to go on outpost duty to see if they had followed his blue prints for the new bunker system correctly. Three nights later was the start of Tet and he was killed during a night attack on the outpost.

two new guys who had gone to school, basic and AIT together were gung ho to go on patrol and took my place. Both were killed, one was shot
and the other kept looking up for him.

Thank you, Huey Driver, for this post. My husband's dog tags are in a shadow box under the flag from his funeral. Agent Orange took his life.
