After much agonizing over which digital camera to get started with, I made this unlikely choice. Ultimately, I don't know if it would have made too much difference which one I picked. It was about getting started. I had narrowed down my choices between the Olympus C-2100, at 2.1 megapixels, and the Sony DSC-F505, also a 2.1 mp sensor. As cool as the Sony looked, I was bothered by its oversaturated reds, and their proprietary stick memory card. I still regret not having owned the Olympus. Then along came the HP 850 which claimed 4.13 mp, had an attractive zoom range and was much more affordable for me. I was worn out from indecision and just threw caution to the wind, and did it.
My main point here is not about the camera, but how my photography evolved from primarily documenting my construction jobs through the years, to a real joy of just taking pictures and indulging in a more artistic thought process. No longer constrained by the cost of film and development, I began to take pictures of anything that caught my eye. I was really having fun! So I give my first digital camera all kinds of credit for giving me the freedom to radically alter my photography experience. I did decide to go Canon DSLR a couple years later with a D60. 6.1 mp. And eventually I used the 5Dii for many years until late last year when I was pining for the Nikon 850, but decided the 810 would itself be totally adequate.
These pictures are from 2002 with my HP 850.

For years I hauled scraps from work up to a friends place in Putney Vermont and made sculptures which were lit to begin the evenings bonfire. Often laced with fireworks as an extra element of creativity. Yea Right
