Specifically, did you get a hot shoe cover? I didn’t, although I did get two pieces of plastic that I have no idea about. Maybe they are for cable routing? No clue.

Mine came with a plastic hot shoe cover. I don't use the plastic cable stays that I believe are meant to keep the cables from detaching when tethered to a computer. They really don't seem necessary.

Good thought. I did check the box, but I’ll check the manual too. Thank you.

Same

I seem to recall they were first used to protect the photographer. A high voltage flash plugged into a PC connector could give you a shock through the hot shoe. Eventually they built a little switch into the hot shoe so it was disconnected until something was pushed into the shoe. The little plastic things disappeared as an included accessory with many cameras.

Mine didn't come with the hot shoe cover. I ordered the Nikon BS-3 deluxe hot shoe cover. It's for the D5, D500, and D850. I don't know why they specify those cameras since all Nikons have the same shoe. It's made of two pieces and is easier to attach and remove than the standard BS-1 cover.

Mine came with the Nikon 16-80 f/2.8-4.0 DX lens...

I don't bother with the hot shoe cover; just another small bit to get lost.

I saw an article recently that those 3 cameras leaked around the hot shoe in a water spray test. The cover is cheap and looks really nice on my D500. I am sure I will lose it at some point but I could buy a lot of these vs. fixing a leak that occurred during a rain storm I got caught in.

I can see how it would keep rain out. The upper portion is made of rubber and covers the entire shoe. I haven't had my D500 out in the rain with it yet.
