I see IQ used frequently. Aside from "intelligence quotient", what does it stand for? Also, is there a site that lists all the acronyms used. (Nikon) Thanks all.

For those chosen few who are lucky enough to own NIKON are well aware of what IQ means, cause we see it every time we take an image. IQ stands for Image Quality. Which, again, as a Nikon owner, I am well aware of, I see it in every single photo I take. Welcome to UHH. Glad to have another Nikon shooter aboard. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Question: Was it in WW2 that acronyms became into being? everyone knows the meaning of 'snafu', but what about 'fubar'?

"NAFA, or not another f***ing acronym! Don't you just hate them?" I DO and further more those who are so smug using them thinking it makes them smart.

I only hate them when I don't know what they stand for--IMHO.

It's something that if one has a high number of then one doesn't have to ask.

I suppose every question asked on UHH could be answered through Google....but this is a photographic forum where questions are welcome. . .

Agreed. . . The only stupid question is the one un-asked.

My impression is that this is supposed to be a friendly forum of nice people socializing over the common-interest of photography. If I ask my friend what time it is, he doesn't tell me to go look at a clock.

In the Frequently Asked Questions forum section there is a lot of good information. Here is a link to Terms And Abbreviations in that section. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-26493-1.html

Thanks Mac, I needed that information badly!

Answer: No.

A 1917 letter to Winston Churchill concluded with "O.M.G."

In 1879 the telegraphic code from the United Press Association included SCOTUS and POT (replaced by POTUS in 1895).

WWII did give rise to many acronyms, but they were by far not the earliest.

Plenty of gas in a farp.

LOL! And according to the Urban Dictionary, a farp is when someone burps and farts at the same time, either accidentally or purposefully. Farpers should be held in great regard for the skill required to coordinate different bodily noises.

Of course, acronyms only become official when they are sanctioned by the American Committee for Research on Names Yielding Mnemonics (or, ACRONYM, for short)

I/Q is also two signals 90 degrees out of phase in a quadrature detector for radio.

Acronym overload...
