Hi all. A good number of you wrote in with a whole variety of advice ranging from Helpful to confusing- and let me say any confusion was probably my fault. What was clear right from the outset was that I have much to learn and that I should begin this exercise in the "shallow " end of the pool. You have all given me much to think about and so Thanks for that. My apologies if there are any of you to whom I was expected to reply to I found myself a bit overwhelmed by all the comments and " took cover." I am slowly reading and re-reading through your comments and along with the manual and "Dummies hope to develop some idea of how to use this equipment to its best.
I will hopefully in the near future take some shots that I will post for comment. Thanks to all.

Pete - I had gone back and looked at your P900 shots prior to your "upgrade". For the birds in good light, I was impressed by your P900 success. In the end you may find the DSLR is more complicated to achieve the same / better images. As they would say in sport, at least here in the US version of the commentary, the "ceiling" on the DSLR is much higher. Hopefully, you're interested and excited about the journey. But, don't feel compelled to slog along that path if it really is not what you're interested in doing.

CHG- Thanks I hear you! I have decided to exercise some patience and let it run so to speak - see where it leads. I may decide to hang on to the P900 but it would be a shame not to try and get the best out of the D3300 and then progress from there if at all possible. I may find that at the end of the day the deciding factors will be affordability and whether or not I am able to adequately grasp what I need to. I have in my favor a "never say die" attitude to most things. So lets see. I am most grateful for the time you and others have taken to set me on the right track.
Pete,
Many good and experienced photographers have and use BOTH a DSLR and a Bridge camera like your P900. As CHG says, there is a higher limit to the DSLR because of a few things, like a larger sensor, and the ability to add specialty lenses and filters that will enhance and or emphasize the subjects you choose. BUT, the really important part is the composition and eye for the interesting subject. A photograph is made by the photographer using the tools(s) at hand. Concentrate on interesting and compelling subjects in ever more interesting light--or lack thereof. Shadows define, highlights draw attention. and YOU choose to frame whatever YOU choose. Have fun!

There is in the gene pool. I guess it depends on our personal make up.

For sure. My God. He could "slog" the path of being pompous and arrogant.
I like it when someone points out how wrong I am about some technical issue. That's how I learn.
