When taking advice

So, I’ve noticed a few users around here who like to give a ton of advise, and say that they were or are still a professional and yet in over 500+ posts have yet to post a single picture. I understand not being able to show images that were made under contract, but one would think that they have some personal images that they’ve taken that would still be helpful when trying to prove a point, or could be educational to others. While I don’t post images nearly as much as I used to, I still have my personal website available to anyone who wants to view it by clicking on my user name. I’m not a professional photographer by any means, but being a design consultant in the real world, one has to have a decent portfolio to be taken serious by clients. Frankly put, if you talk the talk, it’d be nice to see a visual example every now and then.

I know what you mean, but many people simply do not like to post their pictures online - for whatever reason.

Then why join a photography forum? At the very least post real references with links.

I have learned to take advice from some people and dismissing advice from others. There are enough people both professional or otherwise who are willing to share their thoughts with visual examples. So I am not too concerned about those you mentioned. UHH is big enough community that I don't have worry about those few "professionals"

I've learned enough here by reading that I could fill hundreds of pages with information. I prefer reading information to looking at photos. I learn techniques, how to solve problems, and what gear I absolutely must buy. I always look at the Gallery, but information is my main interest.

Yes, posting a picture as an example - good or bad - is a good idea.

As many people have complained, they post a picture or two, but it soon disappears in the long queue of pictures posted by the other 86,000 people on the forum.

I get a whole lot more from those that use text to actually answer questions and try to be helpful, rather than just look at all their pretty pictures. While I'll admit that an example can be a good thing, it's rarely necessary to actually discuss something. I personally do not post photos anymore because of repeated problems with my photo processing computer, due to internet activities and have taken it off the internet entirely. I do all my internet stuff on a cheap Chromebook now and keep the two machines completely isolated. So far this system has prevented any further problems and I'm sticking with it even if it is a bit extreme.

I've been watching this forum for a while and consider it reasonably well balanced between the know-it-alls and the know-nothings. Fortunately my experience as a hobbyist photographer lets me know which is which. I do find everyone has something to contribute however small. Thank you for providing me with interesting reading every morning, Tommy2

One doesn’t have to post a picture to “prove” their mettle as a photographer; as you say, these disappear quickly. A link in their signature line to a website or social media photo sharing service will appear in each comment they make. This can serve as their “proof” as a capable photographer.

What's the purpose of the Forum? Is it to display photos or exchange information? I suppose it's a little of both but for me, it's the latter and while I've posted a few photos, I've done so to illustrate a question I'm asking or to support a statement I've made. The Forum has taught me about BBF as well as providing good advice that directly affected my equipment purchases and that information did not require any illustration. For the most part, it seems photos are posted for a variety of reasons ranging from showing where the OP went on vacation to the extreme reach of their zoom lens to simply showing off their skills. I have no problem with their motives or intent but I'm more interested in the active topics as a source of information that can improve my skills and my enjoyment of the photographic process.

I agree it would be nice to see accompanying pictures that help drive home the point of something you are explaining. As far as saying they disappear to soon, that's a lot of hog wash.

I think Gene sets a good example. I don't recall seeing any of his images in the Photo Gallery, but I see plenty when he is explaining something where a photo is helpful.

That said, everybody comes to any forum for their own reasons. I doubt that everyone who participates in a Ferrari forum own, or has ever driven one. They still enjoy talking about them.

I agree. We recently had a purported expert, Chris T, who put him/herself forward as a photography guru, made thousands of postings and, all sans images. I looked, asked and searched to no avail. I wonder where he/she went? As for me, I like my work to be seen and I work hard to see that it is. I think we all should. I enjoy seeing the work of other photographers.

Chris did post some pictures in the gallery. There wasn't much to say about them so they disappeared pretty quickly.
