Lens has literally come apart--problem with SD card ... photos gone

I just opened my camera bag and removed my Nikon D5300. The Nikkor 18-300 DX F.6.3 lens has literally come apart between the focus ring and where the VR on-off and automatic-manual settings are located. Has anybody had something like this happen?

Also, I finally was copying my photos from the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador to my desk top computer this morning. One card gave a reading that windows couldn't read it and to scan and repair. No message that that might wipe out my card. Anyway, the photos are now gone. Anyone know of any service that might be able to recover the photos on the SD card. Norton used to have a program that could read deleted files on a hard drive. Does it still do that for a card?

Recuva https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva/download
If the information is still on the card and the card is not physically damaged, this will work.

Sounds like your camera bag has suffered a serious drop to damage that lens that way. Time to send it to Nikon for repair.
As for the SD, Bob addressed that issue. There are lots of recovery software suppliers out there to reciver your images, some are free and some cost a few bucks.

I will second that and raise the bet.
Last year I had something like that happen and went past the entry level version of the app and bought (aprx $20) the pro version. It worked, in fact it recovered things off that card that had been shot over two years ago and then foremated multiple times since then.
It came up for renewal today at a 20% discount and I started to delete the e-mail, then remembered what happened last year. I invested the $17 for a renewal because I could feel my old buddy Murphy watching and chuckling about me dropping the app.

Been there , done That, with a 1gb card and had the same results, OMG can you imagine doing this with a 32gb or larger card? It took me almost 10 hrs to sort out the images that I needed, The software assigned new file "name/ numbers" and the images were not in order.

There are recovery services that MAY be able to recover your images. Depends on how it was "repaired", just erasing the master directory or reformatting it.

This recommendation can yesterday from Kim Komando.com. PhotoRec is paired with a program called TestDisk that recovers lost partitions and makes non-booting disks bootable again. Here is the site to down load. https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec.
I hope this helps. I have used Recuva on an SD disk.
