Lee, do yourself a favor and get an XRite ColorChecker Passport. You are already shooting raw, which makes it easier to get accurate, repeatable results. It has a gray card, but the color swatches are far more accurate.

This is all you need to know about the ColorChecker Passport, and why it totally blows away any other method you might be considering for getting correct color (white balance and color tint balance).

Hi Gene... what a great device.... However I don't know that it would work out for the type of shoots I do... Gene, I do picture day for youth sports clubs, in which I do around 80~100 kids ( 10~15 per team every 15minutes including a team shot). From what I learned about the checker, it applies to only one person at a time. I won't have time to interrupt the flow of the shoot by taking checker shots...
Gene I think for the type of shoots I do, I will do a Custom WB for the camera, ( Canon 7D), since I will have the same lighting throughout the shoot... At least when going into LR the WB will be consistent.. There is a wide range of face colors with these kids, from dark skin negro, Irish white skin, to Latin skin color.... I set up my mono lights (distance & power) the same way for each shoot, and adjust camera histogram in Manual mode.. Its then I will do a Custom WB to the subjects mark on the ground...
The only thing is that occasionally a few skin tones will have a yellow cast or a saturated orange..... This I don't understand, but am able to desaturate or adjust the WB slider in LR... Any suggestions will be much appreciated..

The reason you use a three stripe target and center the outer two spikes in the histogram is that the center spike will be off dead center, one way or the other, depending on your chosen Picture Style and Contrast menu settings.

Hi... BTW is used to work for LifeTouch... Now I am doing picture day for youth sports clubs. Basically the same. I out source my images to a color lab, because they add templets to the various packages... That said Burk, I am not satisfied with the prints. They are not consistent and at times over saturated, Dark with little or no detail in the blacks, as well as skin tones that vary from orange to yellow cast... My set up is 2 AlienBees/umbrellas, backdrops, Camcorder, wifi device to an iPAD... I am using a Canon7D, and set my exposure using the cameras histogram... I shoot Manual/RAW. That said, I am now going to do a Custom WB after the lighting is set. Hoping that I will get consistent face color..
Question... When shooting in RAW does picture styles have any effect on saturation and contrast? What custom setting should they be if useable? I do notice that my camera saturates reds, and has dense blacks.
I would love if you would teach a good system to get consistent good face color...
