Bass Harbor Light

This is technically NOT a lighthouse as it does not have a beacon, just a flashing red light.
The bass harbor light is on Mount Desert Island adjacent to Acadia National Park.
This was taken near midday---the worst time to shoot--as I was scouting for a more dramatic shot later in the day. This is a 5 shot composite with the camera in the vertical position. It is a good thing I took this opportunity to get an image as it started to rain and continued for the next two days. I have other another image I'll post later. Thanks for looking and please use the download.

Well captured.
Download view is the best!
Did you visit the light from the parking lot side?
When I was there, I had about twenty of my newest friends climbing all over the rocks taking pictures as well.

Larry, this is a fantastically beautiful image! The light seems perfect to me and I would have never known you shot it at noon if you hadn't said so. Very saturated, in a good way, did you use a polarizer?

Beautiful! The rugged detail of the rock is emphasized by the lighting.

This scene is so vast that I could not capture it in a single frame. The cliffs are high, and the lighthouse is set to far from the see to get it in a single shot. At least not with my camera -- I only have a 24mm at the widest setting.
Thus the only choice was a pano.

Thanks for looking.

The colors in the rocks are really interesting. The contrasts are striking.

Jay Pat, the weather was really awful. It was quite cold (in the 20s) and windy. There were no other folks brave enough to take the cold and be there. I have a couple of shots from the parking area and from the paved trail to the building itself but they are not anything special--just a record of being there. When I went back later for a golden hour shot---the weather was much worse. I'll post that shot later.

Really appreciate you looking and commenting.

Great image Larry. I have to say you really optimized this scene with your colors and composition.

Thanks nimbushopper. The clouds racing in being me probably helped with light control. I always use a polarizer for shots like this. Cuts the glare on those rocks. As for the color I usually underexpose my shots by a stop---does wonders for saturation. A trick I learn back in the day when Kodachrome slides was the shooting standard.

You have to climb those rocks to appreciate them. They are rugged. There is a staircase that several people I talked to said they were too scared to een try. It was really steep, wet, slippery and windy.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

Thanks a lot. Your most thoughtful comment means a great deal. Making panos are second nature to me now---I do it a lot, sometimes I think too much. It was the scene that forced this composition and the need for a pano. Could not figure out how to get this feel any other way. (and I don't own and hate fisheye lens).
