Be prepared to articulate exactly why your D300S is not good enough anymore. What do you need a new camera to do that the 300 doesn't? (This will be an issue out of concern about your finances and waste)

An aside---it is OK to respond "it's my money, I want a new camera"; because it is your money.

I have a D300 (DX) and D810 (FX). The D300 takes great photos still. The D810 has caused me to experiment and push myself further because of all the bells and whistles BUT... the D300 still takes as good a photos. It is the user who pushes that button. Ever consider looking at your lens collection and seeing what you may want to add in order to expand the capabilities of the combination? When I bought higher end lenses my game changed tremendously as my shots were cleaner with less light. D3400 is a nice camera with all that said.

This is just about the BEST ADVICE you're - probably ever - going to get on the reasoning behind contemplating an upgrade -- and as the man said ----
It's your money

D7200. I would recommend the D7500, but single memory card slots are a deal breaker for me in a DSLR.

It's easy. You said DX so there is only one choice the D500. The D7200 or D7500 are much newer than your D300s and are considered updated but I would consider those as downgrade.

The D500 is the D300/D300s replacement. I used to shoot with a D300s. I liked the camera a lot but its dynamic range was not good. Shadow areas would often block up and be void of detail. I have a D500 now. Its image quality and performance are far superior to the D300s.

Plus you can use your existing lenses

You have many options. You should look to your google search and investigate a refurbished D7200 or D7500, and the D500. You can also buy new if your want. I believe Nikon has a current sale on several of their camera's. Nikonusa.com should offer these.

I am in the same situation (D300) and would only consider a D500 if I were hit by GAS. Because of its light weight, I often “borrow” my wife’s D5200 and I have a P900 for its incredible reach (no RAW, I know, I know).

Great response. My answer would be set a budget, determine what you want in your next camera and buy it.

If shooting sports or wildlife I know the D500 excels otherwise the D7200 should serve you well.

I sold my D300s to a photojournalist and bought the D500. The D500 is a great camera.

What he just said! The look, feel and controls of the D500 are almost identical to the 300, but the expeed 5 processor produces much better image quality in lower light.

If you don't want it anymore I'll give it a nice home, I'm always taking in orphans and strays . . . . . .
