I know there are many free software packages to download. Can anyone advise a good software that has a good tutorial?

GIMP would seem to be a very popular one..... I understand it has a decent tutorial series, but be aware that it will probably have a high learning curve.

Since your question concerns post processing, you might want to post this in the Post Processing Digital Images section:

What camera? Several manufacturers like Canon and Nikon have free downloads of their proprietary image software.

Nikon's software is probably just fine for people just learning postprocessing. The freeware is pretty basic. The priced Nikon software is better, but if you're spending money on software I think you'd be better off with something other than Nikon. Nikon excels at building cameras. Other companies excel at writing software.

I must admit it's been many years since I used Nikon editing software.

Most software does things in a similar way. The differences are in 'where' you find the tools and what they name their tools.
PS and PSE have the greatest number of tutorials on 'how to' do editing. Most Post processing software websites will have tutorials or PDF's on 'how' and 'in which order' to do editing using their software.(Combine reading)
The trick is in getting your head around deciding what you want to alter (and by how much) and the simplest. easiest or best way of achieving that alteration (combination of tools or simply a single tool). You can learn this by watching tutorials (of any programme) to get an understanding of what is involved for each task - then looking at your own PP programme for 'similar tools'.
People talk about 'pre set' tools (and often decry shooting in auto???) These often give a 'global effect' rather than a 'fine tune'. For me 'a fine tune' is more pleasing. But each to their own! If you are looking for a certain 'style' then some of the plug in effects may be your preference in which case your choice of programme may be limited.
Remember that most programmes will work with Jpg files and Tiff etc. So the shortcommings of one programme can be overcome in another programme. Your raw files are specific to camera model and converting those to another format can be easily done with your own camera software.

Make copies of a few of your images and put them in a seporate folder marked playtime......then 'play' with those images using whatever programme you try. If you get 'orrible!!!' nothing is lost.

have fun for a while and then look at the 'technical side' of 'why/if' you need specific
software. (that will depend upon 'what' you use and 'why' it doesn't go far enough).

For that you need specialist help on a specific task using a 'named' software....otherwise you will just get told to buy LR and PS.

enjoy the journey.
