Pro-Photographers Charles Chessler and Chris Lord both do NYC walk-arounds. See them on Facebook. Both publish pictures of their walks on Facebook. You can mention my name as they know me (also a NYC resident 35 yrs).

The Cloisters in Upper Manhattan. Part of Met Museum. Great view of GW Bridge if the weather is clear

Take the ferry over to West NY and get some evening shots of the west side of NYC. Bring a wide angle because the view is AMAZING. The park extends for ~ 1/2 mile and includes the site where Alexander Hamilton was killed by Aaron Burr (at the extreme south of the walk). You can also get a great photo of the west side leading up to the G Washington bridge.

Hi All
I'm doing a 10 day trip to New York City in September and looking for some tips - where to go shoot. Is it better to get advanced passes (tickets) to the regular sites - Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty etc. ?
Any suggestions on teaming up with a professional photographer that does group walk-around. I want to do some street photography - night photography.

James Maher comes to mind - has anyone joined his groups?

NYC is truly one of the best places for all sorts of photography. James Maher is a great resource and a real pleasure to spend time with. I highly recommend him. I spent 1/2 a day with him walking SOHO, Chinatown, manhattan Bridge, and he’ll take you to restaurants in Chinatown for some of the best dumplings. His price is right too. Check him out on Trip Advisor.

If you're feeling really adventurous - also try:

* The Bronx Zoo
* NY Aquarium (Coney Island Brooklyn - always with company - always wanted to get a nighttime 20 sec light trail shot of the rides in motion - but dangerous)
* NY Botanical Gardens (NYBG)

* Rockefeller Center is nice but I think it's better in the winter around the holidays.
* Madison Square park. (23rd/Madison)
* Central Park (daylight hours!)
* Prospect Park (daylight hours!)
* Greenwood Cemetery (Brooklyn - daylight hours! - very historic - famous folks buried there - good sights!)
* WTC - 9/11 Memorial - lower Manhattan has nice street shooting ops.

There’s a book photographing NYC. The high line gets extremely busy especially on the weekend. I find it rather disappointing. Go to Central Park, walk on Fifth Ave or Madison ave. Also go to the 911 Memorial even if you don’t go to the museum. For museums consider the MET, Modern Art, Natural Hisotory, Frick or Guggenheim depends what you like.

I could add a couple of questions, are your going to have access to a car? the City is a big place, Manhattan is large enough but covered with a very good transit system, the outer boroughs ...well you need a car. For example Conference House on Staten Island, historic back to the revolution and the most southern point in NYS, a bit of a bus ride from the ferry, Gateway National Seashore Park is about half way between those two points, on a different bus route Ft Wadsworth, we also have Sailors Snug Harbor, collection of old buildings, botonacial gardens, Chinese Scholars Garden and museums. You could spend most of you time on buses travelling around to see them so your choice of things to see depends on your mode of transit, Are you intending to stay in Manhattan for the whole time?

You can go to the regular tourist places at regular tourist times, but the more interesting photography can be had in other areas. It depends on what you want to come back with. All of the above are great, but there is much more to NYC than Manhattan. The outer boroughs have excellent photo ops. Good to start your research now. I am a life-long New Yorker, and I am still fascinated by the seemingly endless number of stuff to shoot.

This photographer, a personal friend, has posted some street, landscape, city scape shots of NYC.

And many of her bird pics are taken in and around NYC, usually Central Park (warblers, raptors and others), Riverside Park, Prospect Park, City Hall, Tompkins Square Park, Bronx Zoo (water and shore birds stop in during migration) - lots of stuff to shoot.

Love y our friends photos of NY - very inspiring.

We will be staying at the Navy Lodge on Staten Island, NY (I'm retired military) and taking the ferry over to Manhattan or were ever else the ferry goes. Will not have a car in Manhatten - I figured trying to find a parking place would be a big problem so will rely on public transportation.

The helicopter over Manhattan and the Hudson is also very nice--good views of the Statue of Liberty and Shea Stadium, Central Park, etc.

Where do you get the helicopter from?

Speaking of parking in Manhattan. Guy with a $250 grand Ferrari drive up to a hotel which charges $79/night (yess it's possible) with free indoor parking. Stays 1 week and goes to the front desk to pay his bill and go home. Clerk at the desk asks him- you paid $79mper night but never used the room at all, why? Ferrari owner says " where else in the City can I park my car safely for $79/day in Manhattan. Sorry for the joke--I just couldn't help myself

Thank you to everyone for your information, suggestions and input. I've copied all your information and will start to digest it all and begin to map out my plan of attach. I can see I will be limited in how much I can see in 10 days and will have to plan another trip, or 2 or 3.

For those that live in or near NY City. We were all focused on photography. One question I forgot to ask about was the weather. Is September a good time of year to visit NY City. I figured I didn't want to be there in the heat of the summer, and surly not in the cold of winter.
