I can't begin to thank you all enough for your thoughtful and invaluably helpful comments. It became quite clear, because to a person you chose it and for the reasons you cited, that #7 was the correct choice. I always followed the advice to recrop it from the RAW file so that the pelican wasn't flying out of the frame. I think the final result turned out great. I'm going to be submitting it next month for judging.
