I was taking photos on Pinckney Island this afternoon and came across the baby bird shown below. The nesting area is on the other side of the pond, so it did not fall out of a tree. The best I could figure was that it came across, up to the path and then, because of the sun and heat, gave up. There were no employees around and, when I tried to call the Fish & Wildlife Service, I got voice mail. I picked the bird up and placed it next to the water in the reeds. The bird stood up and waded into the water.
So, Hog birders, what should I have done?
Looks like a baby Great Egret, so I think you did the best thing you could when putting it in reeds near water and calling it in.

Mike, I think you did good and the right thing.

I cannot say I was stoic during this experience. Now that I am back at the condo, attached is a properly exited photo of the little one. I only had a 70 - 200 lens with me.

So sad.... that little one needs his mama!! When you were leaving, did you spot anyone that works there to report it?
We were at our favorite arboretum a few weeks ago and we spotted on if the turtles that didn't look good.... I had to find someone, I don't know the outcome, but I tried.
You did quite precisely the right thing, Mike. Good on you (and good on the egret, too)!

Unfortunately Pinckney is very basic. There is no staff visible. In fact, I do not know exactly where their headquarters or living area is. I believe it is at one end of the island and you must walk or ride a bike to get anywhere. Unfortunately, I was walking, so I hope my voice mail achieves something.

You did your best, Mike and whatever happens, happens....
enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Poor little thing sure hope mom comes and helps out. I would have done the same thing Mike. We were there a few years ago and the bird life there was amazing. Going back again this year.

I don't think there was much else you could have done. Perhaps it was dropped by an osprey, hawk, or cara-cara that was carrying it away to eat it....
You did the right thing Mike, love that second photo.
You did everything you could. You tried and that says a lot.
