Wanted to share with unemployed veterans

I want to share my experience with this new program for unemployed veterans. Here is a little information: VRAP offers up to 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans.

The VRAP offers 12 months of training assistance to Veterans who:

Are at least 35 but no more than 60 years old
Are unemployed on the date of application
Received an other than dishonorable discharge
Are not eligible for any other VA education benefit program (e.g.: the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Assistance)
Are not in receipt of VA compensation due to unemployability
Are not enrolled in a federal or state job training program

I was approved so I am going to take some photography classes :-) The amount of money you receive varies from $368 to $1473 a month (based on how many units you take). You have to be a full time student in an Associate degree, certificate, or vocational program (that you can finish in 12 months) to get the $1473. There is a limited amount of classes in my area due to not enough teachers. I am on a waiting list for two classes.

The other bump for this program is you have to be enrolled in the classes for a month before you receive any kind of monthly payment. So you will have to pay for your classes and books out of pocket. Something I did not find out until I went to register for the classes yesterday. But it is a blessing for me to grow my photography knowledge. I have four days to pay my register fees or I lose my classes. Classes do not start until August 20 so I will not see any money until September 20.

When you finish the program the VA will give you some assistance in finding a job. Of course no guarantees.

So if you are a Veteran who qualifies please go to the following site:

http://benefits.va.gov/vow/education.htm

and apply. The program is limited to 45,000 participants from July 1, 2012, through September 30, 2012, and 54,000 participants from October 1, 2012, through March 31, 2014.

The current count is 36,832 as of July 20, 2012. So there is still room for 8,168 veterans.
