Too funny. The canyon hasn't changed much since then but cameras certainly have. It was a beautiful spot and tour. So glad I can cross this off our bucket list. Thanks for checking in.

Couldn’t resist posting this image from a chopper ride many years ago - shot with a 2 mp Casio. I apologize for poaching.

Thanks for the compliment and yes, you are correct it is a Maverick helicopter.

Great shots......Looks like the tail boom of a Maverick Helicopter in the one photo.

I agree about the beauty; however, unfortunately the constant loud noise of all those choppers echoing through the canyon can really damage the beauty of the experience for those on the ground--esp. inside the canyon. I know it's a complex issue.

I've backpacked in the bottom of the Grand Canyon before, and the sound from the helicopters really isn't all that noticeable when they are flying over [I only ever saw Park Service helicopters below the rim]. Also took a helicopter tour from airport on South Rim over to the area around Point Sublime on the North Rim and the helicopter stayed near the top of the canyon. That was in 1988 or '89, and I seem to recall the price then was only about $75 for around half an hour.

Breathtaking experience flying through the Grand Canyon by helicopter. We made one stop for a champaign toast otherwise all photos were from the air. I've seen many images of the canyon but photos will never do it justice. A magnificent National Park for sure and so glad I got to see it first hand. Nikon D750, 24-70 2.8.

Rob, excellent set.

You are lucky to be able to see it the way you did, along with any other method of viewing the Grand Canyon. My only view(s) have been from over 20,000 feet flying to California for work back in the 80s. Thank you for the views you posted from your helicopter trip.

No...no. A chopper. Not a plane.

It's a flying fatigue test machine!

Remember, if the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter- and therefore unsafe.

Sorry, I couldn't resist......

Actually, modern (properly maintained and flown) helicopters are very safe and this looks like a great way to get a unique perspective on the Grand Canyon.

Since I have over 2,000 hours flying helicopters I found out one thing.....helicopters really don't fly the earth rejects them.

And I still try to avoid them but would be a good way to view the canyon. I'll continue to enjoy other peoples pictures from the helicopters...

While only slightly hesitant about flying (or Earth rejecting) the helicopter, it was definitely a great way to view the canyon, especially with a limited amount of time. Driving there and riding a donkey to the riverbed was not an option for me (or my wife) If I had a chance to do it again, I would try to find a tour that would get me there at sunset. I bet the colors are fantastic. But for now I can scratch the Grand Canyon off my list!
