I found it quite amazing, and, truthfully, a tad bit pointless.

I have always loved that particular combination of qualities!

A similar but different project is the work of London-based photographer Drew Gardner in which he recreates famous oil portraits photographically, using descendants of the original models. This article http://strobist.blogspot.com/2014/11/on-assignment-lighting-like-leo.html describes some of the preliminary setup work for lighting the Mona Lisa, which would actually be shot later using the two known living descendants of the (most likely) original subject, Lisa del Giocondo.
