Lessons Learned

Recently I placed a listing of film cameras that I had acquired in the Buy/Sell/Trade section. When it was posted there I requested that any offers be made by PP. This resulted in some responses by PP and a number of responses in the body of the thread. Interesting, since I did not believe that negotiations should be carried out in the thread, even it is in the Buy/Sell/Trade section.

Another interesting thing happened was the first reply was an individual who said that he had sold two cameras of the same brand that was among the types that I was offering. It was stated that his cameras sold for X and that I should expect ¼ X. First it was not stated what went with his cameras and second if you are not interested in purchasing the items why make any comments at all. We do not need trolls.

As a result of the listing I sold a couple of items. Some inquiries for others and two offers for a nearly complete system of a medium format camera. Each of the offers for the latter item was withdrawn after I had accepted their bid. Each said that monies were no longer available. While this may be true it also seems a bit coincidental. I believe that is where Gibb’s Rules 36 and 39 come into play.

Lessons learned:

1. List only one item at a time.
2. Expect more tire kickers than serious offers.
3. If offers are made in the body of the offer thread do not respond.
4. Trying to sell with trolls trying to gum up the works is always more difficult.
5. Challenge any trolls to give a 1-1 comparison.

I too, a couple of years ago listed a Canon 'L' series lens on UHH, with 8 photographs, comprehensive details, reason for selling and what was a reasonable price. What I got was inane comments, low ballers and people wanting to trade for something I didn't want. Ultimately I pulled the listing & sold it on eBay for $65.00 more than I had it listed for here. I like you learned my lesson and now when I upgrade and sell my used gear I exclusively use Craig's List and eBay.
