Use of Affinity with Photos

When I use the Affinity tools available in Photos under the "Extensions" everything is fine. I make my changes/corrections and when I click on "Save changes" it switches back to Photos and the changes are made. HOWEVER, when I click on "Edit in Affinity Photo" in "Extensions" the full Affinity screen appears with my photo in it and when I make my edits they appear on the photo (in Affinity) but when I hit "File Save" and get back to Photos the corrections disappear. I haven't a clue what I am doing wrong.

Not an Affinity user but it sounds like you may have to use the “save as, new file” naming protocol. Affinity may be protecting the original data from being changed.
