Nikon vs. Sigma 24 1.4
Looking for some experience based, informed input.
I currently own a Nikon 24mm 1.4 G, which I purchased used about 3 years ago from B&H as a 10 on 10. Looks new. Absolutely love the lens. However, on a recent extended trip to Italy it began to have problems. In short, it started mis-communicating with both of my camera bodies, and now will not autofocus. Performed every single troubleshooting exercise available (including direct input from Nikon support) -- no dice. Obviously not happy. This lens has been well cared for, with very little wear and tear. Nikon provided an estimate for repair -- $600 +/-, includes 6 month warranty on that repair. I have NO experience with Nikon repairing lenses.
So it's decision time. Repair the Nikon OR consider a new Sigma ART 24 mm 1.4. The reviews on that lens have been very good, virtually on par with the Nikon. PLUS 4 year warranty.
Thanks everyone.

For me, it would be the Sigma. The reviews are as you say, excellent.

Thanks for your input. I am tending that way as well.
Looks like the Nikon version is about twice that of the Sigma. Certainly worth trying.
The only possible negative with a 3rd party lens is the communication with the camera. Nikon doesn't always share their technical data for 3rd parties to make use of.
I do not shoot with a Nikon camera, but I do own the Sigma 24mm Art lens that I use on my Canon 6D FF. Absolutely love the lens. I do not think you will be disappointed.

I got the sigma 24 F1.4, and my first shot with it, I won an award for a calendar; brilliant lens, superb for just about anything !
Before doing anything I suggest you clean the metal contacts on lenses and
cameras with alcohol. Do not use rubbing alcohol as that contains an oil.
I had your problem at one time and it worked. I now do it on a regular basis.
No harm in trying it.

Unless 'GAS' is part of the equation I would ask myself if I was happy with the IQ of the lens before it developed AF problems if I was the next thing I would consider is the cost difference between an "estimate" of $600 and the price of the Sigma, currently $750 +tax. Nikon service in Melville NY often beats the estimate and will advise you before proceeding if the repair will be higher at which point you could decline the repair and then buy the other. I don't know about other Nikon repair locations but I would be surprised if the policies are different.
I'd stick with the Nikon lens. Having attended a seminar, which revealed some of the science behind making Nikkor lenses, no one else compares.

I have been tempted by the Sigma Art lenses; but, to date, have always stuck with Nikon..
No seminar needed.

Nikon has a 5 year warranty.
I've always stuck with Nikkors for my Nikon cameras. The seminar was for lighting, but the lenses and their recipes were discussed to some degree. After that lecture, I'm glad I stuck with Nikkor lenses. The seminar only served to convince me I'd made the right decision.

Yes, I read his original post. NOW, he is considering a new Sigma that has a 4 year warranty, I was reminding him that a NEW Nikon would come with a 5 year warranty. YES, I AM AWARE THAT USED LENSES FROM B&H DO NOT COME WITH A LONG TERM WARRANTY.

No need for caps. Please keep it civil. I took your post as in suggesting his Nikon lens was still under warranty.
