1st shot is a 2 shot stack, good but not as good as the single frame shot. Cannot see the hairs on the fly's body.
so I tried
a 6 shot stack (a miracle the fly and the flowers were still long enough), almost as good as the single frame one the hairs show here.
5DIV with Canon 100 macro, hand held - tried tripod but could not get a good angle so I slipped the QR off the head and used the tripod as a brace to lean on while shooting.
2 shot stack - took 6 frames but 4 were rejects due to wind

Finally someone else that does stacking. I sometimes feel like I am the only one to stack. Thank you for posting this, great detail.-

Thanks for the compliment.
Actually there are several on the UHH who do stacking. And at least one or two who own the Helicon FB Tube - which same I am learning to use now.
The Astronomical Photography section has several. It doesn't do anything for them focus and DOF wise, but a bunch of stacks allow the random noise to be canceled out and the night sky to be black.
Then of course the "True Macro" section has a lot of focus stacked stuff posted.
