In a couple of weeks we will be taking a river cruise from Basil Switzerland to Amsterdam. We have a couple days in both Basil and Amsterdam on our own. Any recommendations of what to do and photograph while we are in these cities? Thanks in advance for your help.

You won't find Basil in Switzerland except in your food, so look for Basel instead :)

You beat me to it! Basel is correct, Roger Federer’s home town.

Sorry for the misspelling but I could use the help with ideas other than word corrections :)

What cruise line? Are shore excursions included or extra?

Most of the trip the cruise line will handle the excursions but we have 2 days on both sides of the trip where we are on our own.

In Amsterdam, with your back against the train station entrance, walk away from the train station across the square towards the vehicle road (Damrak) (as I recall, has trams on it). About a block up, turn right into a small pedestrian street, walk a block, and turn left into a large pedestrian street (Nieuwendijk street). This pedestrian street runs parallel to Damrak, a block over. Long street, makes a nice walk.

Riksmuseum a MUST see. Download the Lonely Planet Guide app from the Google play store for your mobile; has a city guide for Amsterdam.

My wife and I took a similar cruise last summer, moving in the opposite direction. You will not have to worry about subject matter. The Rhine itself will offer much. The towns you visit with have loads of architecture, churches and people watching. Document the trip as it unfolds and you will have enough material to keep you busy when you get home. Enjoy.

In Amsterdam, take canal cruise to see all the different architectural styles. Visit the floating flower shops. See the Van Gogh museum. Anne Frank house should be on the list.

There are tram lines going more-or-less everywhere in Amsterdam and a 48 hour pass allows you to hop-on-off at will (may also be good for the buses but haven’t used them). I second the idea of visiting the Rijksmuseum - as I recall, non-flash photography is allowed. Quick anecdote: first time we visited Amsterdam, my wife said “horrible, dirty city;” the second time, she said “not as bad as I remembered;” the third time she said “I could live here.” By the way, there is great Indonesian food in Amsterdam due to the history of colonization.

You will have missed Keukenhof by then (last day is today) - for anyone in AMS between late March and mid May, this is a must to see of 70 acres of 7+ million spring flowers (mostly tulips).

Other things to do/photograph - canal houses, Riksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, red light districts (but don't even try to photo the girls in the windows - they come out and smash your camera), coffee shops (hint - they don't sell coffee)
Near AMS Haarlem, Delft

Very easy to get around using trains, trams and the occasional bus.

Having been to Switzerland multiple times my opinion is that Basel is one of the very few spots in the country that is not spectacularly scenic. Rent a car, get up early, and drive to Lucerne. It's just a little over 60 miles - an easy one day out and back. While there take a boat tour around the lake, and if the weather is good ride the world' steepest cogwheel
railway to the top of Mt. Pilatus for great views.

On your cruise have you camera(s) ready for the stretch between Rudesheim and St. Goar, Germany. It's where most of the old castles are, high above the river.

The Riksmuseum is on many world Top Ten lists... if you are into museums. Kinderdijk for windmills. The dikes.
