A great composition with the sweep of the milky way and the dead tree against the starry sky.

Couldn't sleep Wednesday night so I drove to the Florida Keys (Marathon) to try to capture the Milky Way. It was cloudy, but I managed a few shots between the drifting clouds. As you can see, the beaches in the Keys are still not cleaned up from last fall's hurricanes (and the new storm season starts in 3 weeks)

Please view on dark background in the download. Thanks for looking.
For those interested tech data is: ISO 2000, 15 seconds, F2.8, focal length 24mm

Beautiful.

Treadwl ... there is a lot of talent showing through in this photo .. pls keep it up and post again ..,

No worries...I have no plans to shot shooting any time soon. I love being out with my camera. It is therapy for the soul and reduces stress.

Thanks for the compliment.

Lovely. That's a beautiful tree.

The tree is compliments of Hurricane Irma.

Thanks for looking.

Your shot is superb. Thank you for the post.

You said the trick is in post-processing. Would you care to share your process?

It is a bucket-list item for me to be able to get a milky-way shot which I hope to do in Acadia N. Park next month.

Start with a well exposed image in RAW shot at the lowest ISO possible.
In LIghtroom check remove chromatic aberrations.
In Camera Calibrations select Camera Vivid
In Basic raise the highlights, adjust whites holding the alt key until they almost burn, then back off. Lower Blacks until you just barely get true black.
Adjust Exposure to show the foreground so it is not a black hole.
Increase clarity
Increase vibrance and saturation to believable levels.

DO NOT SHARPEN

Adjust Noise reduction to clean up and smooth out the sky.

Al these settings vary with each shot because each night features a differing amount of dark and brightness of the stars.

Good Luck

Good luck while in Acadia last month---I was there for 5 nights and it was cloudy every single night. No stars at all!

I had several dead trees to chose from thanks to Hurricane Irma. She did a great job of sculpting them.
Had to sit on some pretty disgusting seaweed to get low enough to raise the tress against the sky but it all worked out. (and I brought a change of clothes for afterwards)

Thanks for looking and glad you enjoyed the shot.
