I've recently gotten the Nikon D850 (love it). Nikon is selling the Nikon ES-2 film and slide adapter which comes with two 62mm adapters. I have the AF Micro Nikkor 105mm lens which apparently does not work with the ES-2. It has a 58mm diameter which seems to be the only reason it won't work. Has anyone made this lens work and does anyone know why the kit comes with TWO 62mm adapters? Thanks for reading, this is a great group.

It°s only compatible with the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G, AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED and AI AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D

Thanks, RWR, I ran across someone's DIY box with a flash at one end and two separated layers of wax paper and a wooden slider to hold the camera/lens at the correct distance. It had no good way to hold negatives but it did work. There are filmstrip holders and slide holders on the market so maybe DIY is the way to go.

The 105mm does not focus close enough for the ES-2 to work. I have the 60mm and am chomping-at-the-bit for Nikon to (finally) release the ES-2 so I can digitize my old chromes. I pre-ordered as soon as Adorama would allow and have received about a dozen apology e-mails from them because Nikon is dragging its heels

The 105 focuses to 1 to 1, wouldn't a simple adapter push the ES-2 to the correct distance.

Possibly, but no camera company is going to try to sell you a $150.00 accessory that you will have to jury-rig to use. You should be able to find a 60mm or an old 55mm Micro on Ebay for a relatively low price.

Have not tried it but plan to make the same purchase later this year. In The film days to make my filters adapt to all of my lenses instead of buying more filters and lens attachments I used to adapt the lenses to the filters by using up or down filter ring attachments. To go to 62mm. I would go to the camera shop and buy an adapter ring that sized up to 62mm from 58mm. Now that real camera shops are mostly on line it is harder to find these adapters or anyone who knows about them. For the cost effectiveness of this you could try it first before buying that recommended lens from Nikon. You just need to know if you need to go up to a larger size or down to a smaller size. If you got to a camera store the kids working the counter might know about adapter rings. So you will need to take your gear with you to explain it to them. My old camera store owner died just before digital came in so I was a bit at a loss for knowledge (he seemed to know everything) without that store. The stores that survived after digital came in use cheap labor behind the counter who are learning as they go along. Maybe in 10 more years they may think they know everything.
An example of old tech with new is my portrait filter kit by Monte Zucker. The filter kit is a 58mm thread and to work with my film 2 1/4 square negative camera meant I needed about a 62mm thread So I got a 62mm down to 58mm adapter ring. It also works the other way but then they call it an up size adapter. I found I can still use the old filters I have with digital with an exception to color balance with color filters. Color filters throw off the sensors in the camera as the sensors try to correct the color filter to what ever color setting you have in auto color correct.

Which is why Nikon made it to fit a lens no one normally buys. Increased lens sales. He might be able to just use an adapter ring to compensate for thread size. I still have several from film days. One makes a UV filter in 62 mm thread fit on a 58 mm lens. A 5$ to 15$ adapter may work for the OP without compromising the edges of the film frame on the copy device.

That's really curious. I've had my 60mm Micro for 19 years now. Not only a fantastic Micro lens, but one of the sharpest lenses Nikon has ever made. Works quite well as a "Normal" lens, too. I bought the 105 about 10 years later just to give me a tad more working room and because I came into some extra coin.

Just get a 5 bucks step-up ring and you can use your lens!

That’s not why it won’t work..... if only it were so simple.

The short adapter is for the 40mm lens, the longer one is for the 60 - they place the film at the correct distance from the front of the respective lenses to focus at 1:1. Nikon does not make an adapter for a 105mm lens, but you might find some combination of tubes to work. Heliopan metal hoods, fo r example, are threaded the same both ends and can be stacked. They make a Short and a Long, but I don’t know the actual dimensions. (The 58mm Long is a 30mm long tube, which may give some indication.) Personally, this is what I use:

Edit: My lens is a 75 f/4.0 APO Rodenstock Rodagon D on an Ihagee (Exakta) bellows.

Thanks everyone, I had considered an adapter ring, the ones supplied are, as mentioned 62mm but as yet I don't know what size the other end is, though 58 to 62 should connect them. RWR mentioned that the TWO filters are for the 2 different length lenses. The B&H product references are pretty pricey (yeah I did buy the 850). I don't have the ES-2 yet and it seems like it still hasn't shipped. Maybe when someone gets his hands on one the solution will be easier to figure out. Interesting that Nikon hasn't figured it out yet. Thanks again, guys for all the help.

I think Nikon has figured it out, that’s why they don’t make an adapter for a lens longer than 60mm. When my 75mm lens is focused on a mounted slide, it is about 108mm in front of the lens. I wouldn’t want anything that long hanging off the front of my lens - it would be much worse on a 105. Not much working distance is needed for slide/negative copying, and I think for a slide holder to be attached to the lens, 60mm focal length is about the practical limit.
For what it’s worth, I chose the APO Rodagon D because it’s the only lens I know of that’s designed exclusively for color slide copying at !:!. I’d be happy if it were a 50, but they only make a 75mm.

At the cost of a lens vs cost of an adapter ring it 's worth a try. I was working on converting the light in my projector to an LED lamp to lower the light output so I could shoot back into the slide carrier. So far I just need a brighter LED source. The flashlight LED I used was almost there.
