Odd Holes in the back yard

I mowed the grass, 1st time, today. Wife said it was too tall and the squirrels were having trouble getting around. The yard was rougher than I remembered from last fall. Well, I found out why, 6:30 this evening 5 squirrels are hopping around searching for buried walnuts and digging them out. No wonder the yard is a mess.

On the up side, these were taken with a T3i and Sigma 120-400 on a tripod setting on the kitchen table through double pane glass, on a dark and cloudy evening. This is the first match with this camera/lens and the lens works so much better than it does on the 80D. It's going to be a keeper.

Do you know that Squirrels never find 80% of the nuts they've hidden?

The extent of their digging says that's true.

How many Squirrels did you poll to establish this statistic? Just curious. Got up too early.

That's because Stellar Jays come and take them right after they are buried.

First, by the sounds of it, I thought you have some weasels in the yard, because they do leave some holes behind. I used to have some in my yard, but they never made it long. The cat always got them and obviously thought I like to have them, because she aways brought them to my door step! We do have squirrels in the yard now, and although they do burry their nuts and such, I've never noticed any holes left behind by them!

It was part of a Sarah Silverman stand up gig a few months ago. Felt sorry for the little beggars.
