Four Killdeer Eggs Now and Mom & Dad Are Doing Great Work Distracting Me From The Nest
We Mama has now laid a total of 4 eggs as of yesterday. So fingers crossed they should all hatch between 24-28 days.
Both Mama and Daddy are doing a great job, with the wounded bird act to try and distract me from the next.
Killdeer make their next (unlike most other birds) on gravel. They may use a slight depression in the gravel to hold the eggs, but they don't line it at all, or line it only with a few stones.
4 Eggs Now, in just 24+ days they will hatch.

They always build in my driveway. My neighbor girl puts little flag by the nest so that we don't drive over it.

Isn't it strange how they build their nest in the most dangerous places. This one is right at the entrance to my vegetable garden. I'm to afraid to use the tiller in case the noise frightens her away or a stone flys over and hits the eggs.
A neat situation! Having them so close to observe is pretty special. I know you are respecting their space (even if it encroaches on your gardening) so all should be well!

Thanks it sure is. They make their nest next to the vege garden every year so I'm sure these are the same Killdeer.
Great set, Lorima and please keep us posted!

A few years back one built a nest on the edge of the 18th hole of a local golf course. The golfers had marked around the nest with broken club handles to protect it.

Oh how sweet, they tend to build their homes in the strangest places don't they?
