locking a mirror up - does that make it mirrorless then?

No it does not as you still have shutter shock and you’re missing the EVF so important

Similar in some ways but not the same.

Last year I traded a wonderful collection of Nikon cameras and lenses, hoping that a mirrorless camera would lighten my burden on hikes near home and while traveling. I was almost immediately disappointed in the IQ and the loss of the “feel and function” that came with the use of DSLRs for so many years.

After taking another punch in the wallet, I got back to Nikons and, after much searching, discovered that with the Nikon D5600 (which i LOVE) and the newest Nikon P lens 70-300, I get terrific IQ and it weighs about the same as the mirrorless.
Last year I traded a wonderful collection of Nikon... (show quote)

Which mirrorless camera did you try? APS-C, 4/3rds, or 1"?

Excellent. I'll sell all my Fuji kit and go back to Nikon then.

Just remember, with a mirrorless camera, one gets a viewfinder for bright sunny days. That and less weight.

What if your mirrorless has no viewfinder?

All the mirrorless that I know of have EVFs. The only mirrorless cameras w/o one are P&S from what I can find. Also, to answer one other of your questions, most mirrorless can turn off the shutter so there is no shutter shock. That is how Olympus achieves 60fps with 20mp RAW images. There are two downsides to that in the images can suffer from rolling "shutter", an electronic effect, and at that rate of shooting one fills a chip fast.

Yes but you can go to electronic shutter in this case there’s no moving parts thus no shutter shock
