Sony A7III and lack of compatibility with photos for MAC

I just recently purchased the new Sony A7III. The camera seems great. I just returned from the first trip with the new camera and am unable to download to Photos for Mac. There is currently a software compatibility issue. I’m an amateur with interest in pursuing major hobby over time. Any suggestions on how to deal with this issue in the short term ? I presume Apple will fix the issue but it may take months. Should I make the switch ti Lightroom and do they support this camera?

I use a Mac for all of my photos. I do not like the way Apple handles photos in the Photos app. You cannot easily access the file on the hard drive after the photos are imported. So eventhough Photos will automatically import from my Nikon or Olympus, I transfer the photos from camera to hard drive using either the Nikon or Olympus software. Then I only import files from my hard drive to Apple Photos that I want automatically backed up in ICloud, shared or to show up on my IPhone or IPad

So I would definitely recommend using other software to transfer and catalog files independent of Apple Photos even when it is compatible with your camera.

Been using aMac for almost 30 years now, and I would never use the MacPhotos app. I download the files manually with a card reader, then process in LR, and Photoshop. No problem once you get a a workflow ironed out.

If you're not ready to invest in an Adobe plan, there are other programs UHH folks use, many of them free. But the import of photos from camera to hard drive would be the same as I described.

Import to folder on desktop. Wait until camera is recognized by software update
Have fun!

Apple periodically updates the Photos app to include new cameras. It's not a matter of "if" but "when" this will be done to for the A7III.

Yes LR is much better and it does support A7III.

Sony has software that will handle your files and videos. It's "Playmemories Home" and you can install it here: http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/disoft/int/download/playmemories-home/mac/en/

You may or may not want to process your images further using Playmemories but it will definitely deal with receiving and converting your Raw files from your a7III and allow you to further process them as desired. You can do some fair processing using Playmemories but I don't find it to be very intuitive.

Not being aware of your experience level I feel an urge to say that when you convert your Raw files to another format for further processing I would like to suggest that you convert them into a format that does not lose data, and therefore quality, as you open and save the files during processing. The format files you might want to initially save the converted Raw files to would be .tif or .png as opposed to .jpg. .jpg files lose quality with repeatedly being opened and saved back. There are other non-lossy file formats but .tif is probably the most popular.

Playmemories Home does offer an opportunity to organize your files which is part of the draw of Lightroom but Lightroom's processing power is much greater.

Time to move to a serious editor, now that you have a serious camera. You’ll be able to pull more details out of your files using LR.
