Lens question, D90 compatibility.

I’m a new shooter and I have the opportunity to get a Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED (VR) Lens (appx. $150.00 refurbished). The website says it’s not compatible, but i’m wondering if it’s truly incompatible, or if it has features that aren’t supported by my camera, but that will be supported when I upgrade.
I’m hoping to use it for daylight shooting at dog shows and dog sports events.
Thank you for any feedback.

None of the new generation AF-P lenses will work on your old D90. Its processor is just too old to upgrade to this technology. Look for the AF-S VR G version if you need a 70-300 lens for the D90.

The Nikon D90 is a 10 year old camera. Even some early production Nikon D3300/5xxx series DSLRs, needed a firmware, for that lens to be compatible. The previous thread recommendation of a 70-300mm is your best bet.

I have a D90 and a D7500...tried that lens on the D90...does not work. Make sure you get a lens with VR

I have the Nikon 70-300mm AF-S VR f/4.5-5.6 lens that I used to use on a D90. I now use it on a D7000 and D500. Another UHH member already recommended to get the VR version. It definitely helps with getting more stable shots. I took this shot with the lens on my D90. I had the camera in 3D tracking mode. It was able to track the soap box derby cars coming down the hill.
