Nikon D500 question

I love this camera combined with a Sigma 150-600 for my bird photography hobby. I have been using this combination for about a year, and from very onset, I experienced a freezing of my auto-focusing at some very unfortunate times. During these times, I will press the shutter with the potential bird seen in the view finder, but the focusing is locked or not activated even though a photo can be taken (blurred photo). After turning the camera on and off the focusing will eventually be functional.

Usually shooting in aperature priority; matrix metering; auto iso control, and priority release. Batteries and high end cards don’t seem to be an issue. Don’t it’s a buffering situation. Any feedbacks would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Do you have the dock for updates for the lens? Possibly Sigma has fixed this?

Have you updated your D500's firmware? There have been two updates that may apply to your issue.

Back button focus would cure that ill, I believe. Much better for bird photography, anyway.

Never put a 3rd party lens on the Nikon body.

When it happens try re seating the lens in the mount, it could be dirty contacts too!

Strongly disagree!! I have a Tamron 150 - 600 that I use on my D7100 and on my D750. Works fine; never a problem. I also use a Tamron 16 - 300 and a Sigma 10 - 20 on my D7100. No problems.

Strange as it may seem, not everybody wants to spend $10,000 to get a long Nikkor lens for birding!

Also strange as it may seem, not everyone considers price as the first criteria in choosing a quality lens.

Yes, quite true. And, some people don't consider price as the first criteria when choosing quality cars. Etc. Etc. 😊

Are you in single shot mode? Focus always locks when you press the shutter half way in single shot mode.
