I own both Sigma 150-600 lenses, the Contemporary in Nikon mount and the Sport in Canon mount, plus the Nikkor 200-500. I also have the matching Sigma 1.4X teleconverters plus a Sigma 2X teleconverter and the Canon 1.4X III teleconverter and a Nikon 1.4X teleconverter. When shooting in ample daylight or the darkness of night the Sigma Sport with its teleconverter does a pretty good job. It's kind of a pain aiming it at a star cluster but it not too bad. I've also used the Sigma Sport with 2X teleconverter to photograph sun spots. It helps to have the right size solar filters; I have two of them.
How would I rate the lenses?! The Canon lens takes 1st place. I forgot to mention I have a Canon 100-400L II. The Sigma Sport beats the Nikkor in just about everything except weight so it's number 2. The Nikkor is actually a very good lens, especially for the price, and it's one of the few lenses the Nikon teleconverter works on, but I'd be very hesitant to take it places I'd take the Canon or Sigma Sport; so it ranks third. I carry the Sigma Contemporary in the trunk of my motorcycle, a Honda GL1800B, and I've not had a problem with it. I carry it in a padded bag along with a D500, an awesome combination. Of the 4 lenses I've mentioned, it comes in fourth.
All I know about the Tamron lenses is what I have read but if they are anything like the Tamron SP 70-200, they are both good lenses.
Here's the order I'd put them in minus the Canon, Sigma Sport, Tamron G2, Nikkor, Sigma Contemporary, Tamron G1.
I own both Sigma 150-600 lenses, the Contemporary ... (show quote)

I concur. I owned both the Tamron G2 and the Nikon 200-500. Used both hand-held for BIF. Sigma Sport is too heavy to hand-hold.

Would you be handholding or using a tripod/monopod? If so can you hand hold a 600mm with out any shake in the venue you will be shooting. I may be a lot older than you but I find my 70-300mm zoom at 250-300 mm is the most I can reliably handhold unless I use a ridiculously high speed.

Nikon would be my only choice. There's a good reason for that, too.

Hi ...so I'm following this post as I'm in the same boat... not sure which lens to buy. Why do you feel Nikon is the only one? From what I've been reading it seems the quality of Nikon has deteriorated in the last several years. Is that true?

There is only so much research and opinion out there. Ultimately, you should go out and find these lenses in a local store and try them out on your camera. Some can be rented for the day, which would be a good option. Regarding the deterioration of the quality of Nikon products, you can read all sorts of things if you look. Don't believe everything you read, or hear.

Best of luck with your research. Let us know what you decide upon.

Going out to a local store to see and try a lens is not possible. There is one camera store in this location and their inventory is very limited. That is why the opinions on forums like these are so valuable.

Same where I live. A lot of members seem to have access to equipment that we do not. I researched, and spoke to the photographer/owner of our only independent photography store, developing a relationship. Ultimately, I did take a chance as I had not tried any of the long telephotos. I did lots of research, as you did. As you can see, there is a lot of opinion out there. The final push for me was talking to a couple who do photo safaris in Africa. They use the Sigma, amongst others, and heavily recommend it. They even review it on their site. After emailing them, and asking questions, a friend just bought the Nikon, and he likes it a lot. I pulled the trigger on the 150-600. I'm happy with it, with the use I have had of it so far. I can't speak to the quality of the other lenses as I have not seen or used any of them. Hope this helps.

I made a mistake in my last.

After emailing them, and asking questions, a friend just bought the Nikon, and he likes it a lot. Should be, "after emailing them, and asking questions, I made my decision".
