Travelling to Puglia, Italy

I will be going to Puglia next week. Some research indicates that theft is a major problem, and many warnings never to leave anything in a parked car, even in the trunk (apparently thieves can readily spot a rental).

I will be taking limited equipment (a small DSLR body and an 18-250 lens, plus a small pocket camera), and am packing them in a smallish nondescript camera bag. However, I would like to avoid carrying the bag everywhere.

Any ideas how to make sure my gear comes home with me, aside from having one person one the party stay with the car at all times or hiring an armed guard?

Only thing I can say is ALWAYS, ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings. Park in designated parking areas ("P" lots), park under lights, and don't park in seedy or unlit areas. Take your valuables into your room at night. Take normal precautions, don't lay anything down beside you or over your chair when out and about. I keep my passport and money in a money belt. Never carry a wallet in your back pocket, put a fake wallet there and enjoy. I always keep one hand on my camera bag at all times except when shooting and then carry only the minimum I'll need. I've personally never had an issue in Italy but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, I know others who have....Enjoy, great country, great scenery, great architecture.

I'm sure you will have many volunteers from your party wanting to stay with the car to watch your camera stuff. Make sure you have insurance, leave your stuff in the trunk. Hope for the best and have a good time. Or have a good time and just use the pocket camera and your cell phone.

Been in Italy several times and all I can say is don't set anything down of any value, and hold on to your photography equipment and always be vigilant of your surroundings, I personally have had no problems and neither will you if you follow this advice, and most of all have a wonderful and safe trip you will love it.

Just use common sense. At the hotel you should get enough information regarding safety. Do not leave the camera and lenses in your room if you have to do so make sure to ask first in case they have a place to keep the camera under surveillance.
You should be OK otherwise.

my daughter has very close friends who reside in Puglia; she assures me that this is essentially mafia country, and all that this implies. Carry your gear with you, preferably with a stainless steel cable lock round it to your belt; it works !

I wouldn't leave anything in the car, including the trunk. If you want to keep it, keep it with you. Also, when you park the car, leave the glove box open, and if it has a console compartment, leave that open too. Lets any potential thieves see there is nothing worth stealing. Rental insurance would cover a broken window, but a hassle to do or change cars.

Keep your bag in front of you, not on your back or even your side ( a thief will support the bag with one hand while cutting the strap so keep it visible). Be aware of the surroundings, and people. DON'T let a group of little kids surround you, especially if one is holding a piece of paper horizontally (shields his hand as he reaches underneath to open your bag). Just bust on through the pack, keeping an arm over your bag ( ladro is thief, doesn't hurt to shout in this situation). I lived in Italy for 3 years (decades ago), beautiful country, just be attentive.
