Tamron 18-400

I own a Canon 80D and am considering the new Tamron 18-400. I like the idea of using it as an all purpose "walk-around" lens, particularly for travel photography. I'm living in Lima Peru and will be here for another year. Lima and most of its west coast is a dry dusty desert. One appealing feature would be not having to change the lens often which would reduce the amount of dust introduced into the camera.

What are your thoughts? How would the quality of the images be with this zoom? Do any of you own this lens and what has been your experience?

I do fire and wreck type photography and I've been using a Sony A77 with a Sony 18-250. I'm also wondering about the Tamron as I think it might make my life easier!

I own it and I love it!
If the lighting is crisp and bright, the focusing is quick and sharp.
Please check out my posts from 10/31/17 forward.
All images are taken with the Tamron.
I carry other lenses, but I never get to change them.

Thanks for posting this. I'm considering this lens too, so had a look through your posts. Some very nice pics there.

I have had mine for a month and I am very satisfied with it. I use it on my Nikon d7100. I posted some photos a few week ago showing a scene at 18 and the same scene at 400. Nice and sharp through the whole range. It feels well constructed.

My wife loves hers after a few thousand shots with a D7100.

Very nice walk around in Yellowstone.

My Canon is an 80D and my long lens is the Tamron 18-400mm. I had the Tamron 16-300 before this one was released so sold it and bought the 18-400. It is not an "L" lens but I highly recommend it as a good value. I am able to get tack sharp images with it.

As a photojournalist, my main lens is the Tamron 16-300mm lens on a Canon 7DMarkII. It rarely comes off the camera! However, for needed extra reach to shoot an air show, I rented a Tamron 18-400mm lens. To my delight, it performed quite well. Focus was relatively fast but there were a few misses. But that might have been operator error. <gasp!>

As could be expected, a lens with this extensive range is not going to be perfect at the extreme ends... 18mm and the 400mm. As anticipated, there's some annoying loss of sharpness at the wide 18mm. Regarding image quality, it appears that the 18-400mm lens is essentially a 20-360mm lens depending on how much Lightroom can correct possible distortion at the extremes.

I'm seriously considering selling the 16-300mm and buying the 18-400mm. The question: Is the 16mm on the wide end of the 16-300mm lens more important then 400mm on the long end of the 18-400mm considering the loss of sharpness at 18mm? Decisions... decisions.

Happy photoing.

Here's a professional review on this lens. They say it's soft at the 400mm focal length and around the edges at other focal lengths.

I have this lens on my D7100 and it is all that I now use for everyday photo. I have a whole shelf of Nikon lenses which cost a small fortune and the hardly ever move. Buy it!!!!!!!!!!!

I just ordered one, I love my tamron 18-270 but wanted alittle more reach especially with birds and wildlife. So I'm hoping too that it's a good buy.
