High Speed Sync problems w/Nikon

I’m shooting a Nikon D850, and triggering an off camera Nikon SB 800 with Pocket Wizard Flex5. I’m shoomting the camera in manual mode with an Aperture of f2.8, and shuuer speed of 1/8000 sec. I have my flash/bracketing sync speed set to 250 AUTO FP in the camera’s menu. Sb 800 is set to full 1/1 power..
It seems to me that all settings are correct to shoot HSS without any banding problems, but guess what ? BANDING ‘till the cows come home !
I have switched Speedlights, and nothing has changed ! I’ve read all the manuals, and viewed all of the YouTube videos...
I must be missing something, and doing something stupidly wrong.
Can anyone point me in the right direction ? I’d be forever grateful.

Could you be exceeding the capabilities of the flash with it set to full power? Thinking of recycle times- the flash would have to lower its power output in order to fire at that rate.
What is you slow the shutter down and see what happens?

The SB 800 is a powerful flash, fully capable of doing the job. It seems to work perfectly in some of the how to videos I’ve watched on YouTube...That’s what is so confusing...
I have tried it at with less power, and at shutter speeds of 1/4000, and 1/2000 sec with similar banding, perhaps a bit less, but completely unusable.

Just this weekend, on my Canon, I set the flash on camera to ETTL and turn on HSS, then it automatically does HSS when I go above manual shutter speed of 250. I do not know Nikon, but if your flash is set for manual power, that may not allow for HSS to be an option...

I may be wrong, as I normally use my flashes off camera with the PocketWizard Flex system and HSS is automatically engaged and I can switch from manual to ETTL on the AC3.

Canon systems are different from Nikon and even require company specific Flex 5 models. LIke I said, i’ve Read the manuals, and think I have the settings correct, but I thank you for your response. Btw, i’ve Tnried it in TTL mode, but the results were the same.

You did not mention if you tried it on camera? I am a big fan of FP and always worked great on my Nikons. However, I never used it off camera. I don't know if the 850 has an on board flash. On my D600 I use that as the master to trigger off camera flash. That needs to be set up in your menu. Might have to set it the same for the trigger or at least let the flash know that the control is at the camera. Re-check you flash setting. Sounds like something is a-miss. Does the flash fire at all? Interesting problem. hope this helps.

Even with different systems, I was hoping that the basic problem would be the same. I use a lot of OCF, and without the Flex system, HSS has to be turned on along with TTL on the flash menu to engage the sync option. PW flex systems, different for Canon vs Nikon, still do the same functions within the brand. That is only a thought, hope you find the answer.

The D850 has a hot shoe, but I did not try it because my only interest is Off Camera flash. The HSS setup is accessed in the camera’s menu by setting the FLASH/BRACKETING option to 1/250 AUTO FP, which I have done. The screen on my SB800 then seems to acknowledge the setting by displaying u

Eureka !
I think I’ve done it.
I was confused by watching a demonstration of HYPERSYNC that was demonstrated with the same camera equipment, but comparing a Paul C Buff Studio Strobe but the difference was that it was performed in a indoor lab. The moment I took everything outdoors in the bright afternoon sun, everything worked as planned !
My problem was getting so engrossed in the “problem”, I couldn’t see the forest from the trees...
God is good, and everything is as it should be ,
Thanks everyone for your help.

In the analysis, I think the problem was setting the Correct ISO.
In my original indoor test, I had the ISO set at 64, but as soon as I started raising the ISO, the banding disappeared ! In fact when I set the ISO to 1000, f2.8, 1/4000 sec., the banding not only disappeared, the image turned WHIE from over exposure !
A lesson learned.
Thanks again.
