I hope I am not beating a dead horse! Sorry if I am. I have never upgraded to Windows 10 is there is some programs in Windows 7 that I did not want to lose. But if it means better post processing I will have to update. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running Elements, Photo Impact Pro, and Canon's DPP (as well as a couple of other handy programs) under Windows 7 with no problem. "Better processing" may only be faster. Hopefully newer versions of editors are backward compatible with 7.

My problem was some software under '98 did not run on 7.

Are you running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows 7? While most of the latest processing software will run on 64-bit Windows 7 machines, some of that software may not run on 32-bit versions.

Mine are running the 64-bit version.

I am running 64-bit with 2GB of RAM which I may need to increase the ram. Thank you.

I have 4Gb in the laptop and 8Gb in the desktop.
(It would probably help speed things up a bit.)

Eventually, you will find new releases of Applications that will not work with Win7. You will have a lot more options if you upgrade. One caveat: The most stable Windows upgrade is a clean install. All the systems I have had issues with were those where I did a conversion from Win7 to Win10.

I took the free upgrade from 7 to 10. So far no software that run on 7 and not run on 10 so I really lose nothing besides the Windows XP mode in 7. Hyper V in Windows 10 doesn't run XP very well. Usually newer and more bloated OS would run slower on the same computer than an older OS but I don't see it's the case of Windows 10. So I see no reason not to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7. I still keep a machine running Windows XP as there are many software that run on Windows XP but not on Windows 10.

2 gig of RAM is simply not going to cut it. I have 16GB on my laptop and 24GB on my desktop. To run post processing software you would need at least 8 gigabytes to get decent performance depending on the software you're planning on using.

Just as important though is the video card performance, and I'm guessing your video card, possibly built onto the motherboard, will be an issue even if you add more RAM to the motherboard. If your computer is old its unlikely your video card has enough vRAM either, or will support the Opengl hardware acceleration used by, and sometimes even required by, today's modern post-processing software. I'm guessing your machine is quite old to have so little ram in it, and the processor may also not be up to the task. I would do a little research on this subject before you waste any money updating the ram since the end result may not be as satisfying as you hope.

Thank you very much. The machine is 8 years old so it is definitely not new. When purchased it was one heck of a machine so hopefully it'll be able to be upgraded. I guess I'll I have to take it into the shop and see what they can do. It is a media laptop so hopefully I'll get lucky!

I am still running Win 7 Pro, and have had no issues with any software not running - Topaz, Nik, On1, DXO, LR Enfuse, Photoshop, Lightroom, Oloneo HDR, Photomatix HDR, Helicon Focus, Portrait Pro, ProShow Producer, Capture One - they all work just fine

It's not Windows 7 that's the issue. It's the amount of ram, the video card he's running, and the processor he's probably using in this eight year old machine. He's already indicated he only has 2 GB of RAM.

I was going by my memory. I thought I had 2gig but when I opened properties I found I had 8gig. I called Toshiba's tech support and they said the processor could benefit by another 8 to 10gig. The video card is on the motherboard they informed me and they said it should handle Photoshop sufficiently. "I hope the tech is right". I am so happy I found this forum as this community is wonderful! Thanks for all the input.
