Hi all,
I just obtained the Canon Powershot S90 and was wondering what would be the best settings to use.
How should I set up the camera?

Richard,

I see you have been on UHH for years, so I expect you understand common photography terms. The answer to your question depends on what you are photographing. When stopping action, you should be in Tv, or shutter speed preferred and select a high speed. When depth of field is important, aperture preferred (Av), wide open for limited depth of field, stopped down for greater depth of field. When neither is of primary concern, use Auto until you have a good understanding of the three elements controlling exposure (ISO, shutter speed and aperture), their impact and side effects. “Understanding Exposure” by Peterson is highly recommended. ISO should be set no higher than needed to get the desired effect and proper exposure. There will be situations that demand even more fine tuning.

Ken Rockwell did fairly extensive review on the Canon Supershot S90, along with ensuing reviews on the 95, 100 and so on. Substantial operating discussion and a section on separate gallery images. Quite thorough for the casual shooter. I had a 90, a 95 and one later model.. I think the 100. Easy to use, not at all complicated and very sharp images. Well worth the time to read Rockwells review.
