Chrystal Ball "lens" technique

So I fell for the FB ads and bought one of these. I think it's going to be fun to play with. I took it out yesterday and can see it will require a lot of practice. I'm looking for technique ideas so that I don't have quite so many images of my hands holding the ball, also focusing. I tried to focus on the image in the ball. AF didn't cut it, so switched to manual; which was better but not perfect. Short of growing a third transparent arm, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Google search returns many results. This one mentions placing it on a flat surface or having a friend hold it Other tips in the link are included by respondents at the bottom of the article:

I know you are going to find this on YouTube, but after fiddling with it for weeks I figured out that I needed to keep my camera lens on level with the ball and the ball a few inches from The subject. Got a great effect from taking a portrait with the subject holding the ball a few inches from her face. The only problem I had was that she was facing into the sun, so squinting really hard which destroyed the portrait but the effects of the ball were excellent! ha ha Ha ha ha . Sigh.
