Good morning all,

Any suggestions pls for a wired or wireless remote for the D500. My intent is to use it with a long lens and tripod. Not particularly interested in using the timer delay method.

Thank you.

Thanks, but does not appear to be compatible with the D 500.

ML-L3 is ONLY for entry level cameras and does not work with any of the Nikon Pro series bodies as they do not have the IR receptor to work with that transmitter.
MC-DC2 also will NOT work with the Pro bodies as it is not a 10 pin connector, it is a 4 pin connector for entry level and semi-pro bodies only.
MC-30a and any 10 pin type wired remote works extremely well and requires no batteries.

Here is Nikons own full compatibility chart showing all their available remote units and each ones compatibility.

No, it does not, you cannot even connect it to the D500 or any other Pro Nikon body.

Does the MC-30A (or any other) activate autofocus or is it merely a modern day equivalent of a cable release?

Standard function, half press activates focus and VR, full press trips the shutter.

Also, please follow protocol and use "quote reply" when responding to a particular person (as everyone else here has done), otherwise everyone is just guessing who it is you are trying to communicate with.
