Hi all. I currently have the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM which takes great pictures but sometimes I feel a little more wide-angle view would be nice. I am looking at the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM but don't know if going from 17 to 10 mm is worth the cost of the 10-22. I have a 50D camera now and am planning on a 7D by the end of the year. Any thoughts from you wise old Canon users? All my other lenses are L-series.

I don't yet have a wide angle lens either. I may rent one for our next trip - that should help me decide whether to spend the money and whether I can adequately handle the increased distortion.

Bought my Nikon 10-24mm and never regretted it. Do it, and get the canon 10-22. If you don't like it, just resell it.. you probably wont lose more than you would've paid to rent it!

I would say is a middle of the road lens worth it? I use the wide 12-24 and 55-200 much more than any middle ground lens. Learn to use it, get close, get exaggerated perspectives.
Good luck,

"Exaggerated perspectives" - Excellent - you must be much more artistic than I - I like it - food for thought!

I have an 8mm fisheye and a 12-24mm, and I enjoy using both of them. Are they necessary? Of course not. Both lenses can produce exaggerated perspectives, or can produce wide, normal shots, depending on how you position them in relation to the subject. I like experimenting and trying various angles.

I have the 10-22mm canon and it is a great lens. It is L quality glass without the price. Actually, since it is specifically for crop sensor cameras it can not carry the L designation.

No doubt it is a great lens but is that extra 7 mm of width worth the cost when I have the 17-55 already? Am I going to see that much of a difference between the two?

Thanks for your input.

Like Stef C, I have the Nikon 10-24mm and I'm very happy with it. My walk around lens is the Nikon 18-200mm, but the 10-24 is good to have.

Look at the Tokina 11-16mm. Got excellent review. I bought this instead of the Canon. The Tokina is also faster - fixed 2.8 vs. 3.5-4.5. I bought the Tokina and the pictures are sharp.

I've got the Tokina 10-17mm to go on my 7D and am more than happy with it for build quality & performance. Its also a cheaper option than the Canon lens so is definitely worth considering IMHO.

There is a huge difference between 10mm and 17 mm. At the short end, even 2mm is a pretty noticeable difference. I have a Tokina 12-24, and sometimes wish I had the Canon 10-22, but the Canon was kind of pricey.
The wide angle lenses definitely require a different approach. You generally need some foreground element to add interest, otherwise everything looks small and far away.

This is an interesting comment. I did not know this. Thanks for the info.

I have the canon 10-22 and the 17-40L, but the 10-22 I can't use it on my 1d Mark II because it's an S lens but I can use it on my T3i. I took photos of a mega Church from the outside a couple months ago,the 10-22 out performed the 17-40L. In reviews many people ays the 10-22 has the capacity level of an L lens. It produces quality photos. Many of your realtors use this camera because it can capture the entire room and then some. A wide angle lens is definitely worth the investment especially if you want to do landscape or take photos of a city.Rent one and try out, I'm sure you'll be impressed with the 10-22.

There are times when I can't back up far enough to get the shot I want. That's where a wide angle lens is a nessessity.
