I know I'll be flamed over this post, but, here it goes.

I do not own or use Lightroom. I bought Aftershot Pro 3 because it was on sale and I needed a Raw photo editor. I have been reading many posts, here, related to Lightroom, Aftershot and other software applications. So, I decided to investigate the differences in these applications. I found a comparison of five related photo editing applications. It seemed to be pretty fair, as to the analyses, showing side-by-side photo examples.

However, I was reading one person's analyses of five photo editing applications where he said Aftershot was so bad that he wouldn't even spend time discussing it. He happened to be a Lightroom user. Is he just a Lightroom snob?

This person, who shall remain anonymous, found one thing Aftershot did that Lightroom didn't do, but, said that by linking Lightroom to Photoshop he could do the same thing. Well guess what? By linking Aftershot Pro to Paintshop Pro you can do pretty much the same as Lightroom and Photoshop.

What really got me was he mentioned two important things that Aftershot couldn't do, that Lightroom could do. These were related to straightening images and correcting white balance. Aftershot does these very well. It's like he didn't want to take time to find these out.

In summary: I think Lightroom is a great product. I, also, think Aftershot Pro is a great product. There are many great products. They each have features that are similar and each have features that are quite different in the way they work. Lightroom may be better than Aftershot Pro. Be fair in your comparisons and don't be a snob of any kind. The whole idea is to be informative, for those of us who want to learn.

I'm off my soapbox, now.

The important thing is what someone feels comfortable with. You are comfortable with Aftershot, so stick with it. I use Lightroom for last 10 years and do not feel I am a snob. In fact I never heard of Aftershot...lol

I mainly use Lightroom to catalog my images (so I have ease of locating them) and crop them but most of my editing is done with various software! I am not please about Adobe prodding me to adapt to their Cloud, so they can bleed me monthly!

Some people are just snobby. Most people don't care what PP program is used. The end product is what matters.

No, I don't think snobbery enters into it. In comparisons such as the one you mention, the results are ALWAYS dependent upon the person(s) doing the comparing.

I truly believe it is much more a situation where someone made a choice of their editing tool set, invested in the purchase of them, spent countless hours learning how to best use it and all of their images are edited with that tool set. In other words, they have a lot invested. I am no exception and wouldn't think of changing my tool set.

Aftershot is apparently a new Corel program intended to compete on a professional level with programs like Lightroom and perhaps Capture One. I may download the trial to see what it can do in depth. The various reviews I've read of it seem to indicate that while it has a lot of potential to compete with the big boys, at this stage in its development it's not quite ready for prime time yet. Among other quirks, apparently local adjustments are somewhat problematic. Still, at its price, many people may find it meet their needs perfectly. I have experience with practically every raw processing program out there, so it shouldn't take me long to see how they compare, at least to my satisfaction.

The only reason I use lightroom is because it is a program that I had heard of, and had used photoshop years ago. I have much to learn about that program, and even if I knew it extremely well, would not be able to compare it with anything else until I had learned the other program(s) extremely well as well. To me, at my age, I do not have time to learn Adobe products, let alone all other products. So, hopefully, I am not a snob. I don't know enough to quality for snob. Maybe someday I can afford to be one, but probably not, as I am too old. If I had lots of money, I would try a number of other programs to see how they compare. I personally have no allegiance to any particular product, just use what I am most familiar with. I kind of imagine we all do that to a certain extent. Of course, the executive officers of Adobe would no doubt consider their product the best, and they are always doing upgrades to make sure it stays the best. But so do the EO's of all other companies too. Anyway, if it works, it works. I suppose that is the bottom line, so snobbery be danged.

(I don't use LR and probably never will. I have two other editors that work well for me.)

I bought Lightroom on a promo, and have never adapted to using it. I am satisfied with iPhoto, or photo as it is now. Perhaps we all just use what is easiest for our brains to comprehend at the time. Personally, I did not want to commit to the time it would take to learn Lightroom, when all I needed was already a part of my operating system. It won't be the last time I waste money!

My post was not to criticize anyone, here, using Lightroom, or me promoting Aftershot Pro. My only criticism was the guy who said he was a Lightroom user and dumped on another product, without knowing what he was talking about. If someone only read his review, they would get the wrong impression. I don't know anything about Lightroom, so I am sure it is a very good application. I still don't know what local editing is all about, but, I take everyone's criticism about Aftershot not having it. I must not use that missing feature. So, that was my only purpose for the post.

I use LR because it didn't have a steep learning curve, that and the fact that it was recommended by a graphic artist photographer friend. It's just what I use, no feelings attached to it.
