Storage capacity of an Olympus C8080

Some time ago I gave a no longer required Olympus C8080 to a friend. As well as still photography he was interested in using the video capabilites and I told him to buy a 32Gb memory card.

Speaking to him last night he told me that he had bought the card but that it would not work in the Olympus but would in his daughter's camera. He eventually contacted Olympus and was apparently told that the MAXIMUM storage capability of the C8080 was 2Gb! Can that be true? I always believed that the storage capabilty depended on the memory card and not on the camera.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Many cameras will only allow up to a certain capacity card.

Thanks photo-guy but you have to admit the 2Gb is a bit ridiculous.

When that camera was built, that was the technology. That is Standard SD card size. It takes a different program approach in the camera and in the card to write on SDHC cards and the newer SDXC cards. It all relates to how the data is written to the cards memory and how that memory is configured.

Also, based on the megapixel rating of that camera, 2GB held a lot.
With the new MP ratings of current camera, 2GB doesn't hold much at all.

Thanks for the explanation. I gave the camera away because in spite of having cost me £500, it has no commercial value now. That's what technology does for you!

I am using an 8 GB Compact Flash now. I haven't filled it up yet but it functions in my camera. Olympus C8080 can use their proprietary XD or Compact Flash cards. Maybe they were talking about the XD cards?

Some time ago I gave a no longer required Olympus ... (show quote)

I looked up the manual on-line:
The C8080 takes xD, Compact Flash or Microdrive cards - can you even still buy those? The largest capacity for xD cards, if I remember correctly, was only 2GB, they never were made larger than that.
From page 221 of the manual:
"Memory : xD-Picture Card (16-512MB), CompactFlash,
Microdrive*
*340 MB Microdrive cannot be used."
