The guys with the red, white and gray uniforms are a semi-pro team from St Cloud, MN. (Granite City Rocks FC) I do team and game photos for them. The blue team is the Minneapolis FC.

Camera: Canon 7D
Lens: Canon 70/200-f/2.8
ISO: 400
Aperture priority at f/2.8
The Rocks won 5 to 4.

I was shooting in aperture priority so it varied. Out in the sun it was as high as 1/2000 and in the shade as low as 1/800, still fast enough to stop the action.

Why would you let it vary...allow the ISO to vary to hold the shutter speed. Dropping to a shutter speed of 1/800 could have cost you some shots.

This was late in the afternoon and the field was partly in shade and partly in sunlight. So, exposure changer rapidly from place to place, sometime within the same series of pictures. ISO 400 and f/2.8 allowed me to shoot at a shutter speed of 1/800 in the shady parts of the field. 1/800 shutter speed is fast enough to stop action in soccer and ISO 400 keeps the noise low. Every body has a different approach, but for me this was the best way to keep the picture quality consistent.
