It always pays to be prepared. Good job on that 2nd image, Dick. Hope you get many more.

Since getting the Nikon D850 and the amazing lenses I bought to go with it, I have learned to have the camera at the ready at all times. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.

Really nice job Dick - was he putting on the brakes to land on #2 or did he just do that in the air for fun?

Thank you. Actually he had just taken off, so the position and timing were both great (and a bit lucky!). Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Great shot...next time enjoy life and leave turn the phone off.

Haha, how I wish it were so! I got a call out of nowhere last week offering me a key position in a new start-up company, but even given that, I didn't forsake my camera and the opportunity...LOL. The second time I was free and able to grab the camera and get outside fast enough to grab that wondrous shot. I think it's the best action picture I've ever taken and I've had some good ones in the past.

It's not often in life you get a do-over, but I lucked out. The first image was heartbreaking. I was on a conference call in my office when I spied this great blue heron ready to take flight, so juggling the phone and the camera while trying to remain coherent, I snapped off a few frames. It would have been one of my better shots ever, IF ONLY it were in focus. I was so disappointed.

But then, I got a second chance. I saw another, or maybe the same, great blue heron out my window again. This time I was able to set up the camera correctly and the second image is the result. I'm happy now.

Comments welcome. Your critiques and encouragement are so very helpful.

Thanks Jan, I really think it's the best action shot I've ever taken. I like it so much I just blew it up to 11" x 14" and framed it. Fun stuff. My daughter-in-law who is a professional photographer suggested that I change the crop to leave more room in front of the bird to get a sense of where it's going. I did that and like it better. What do you think?

What do I think... three pages of posters pissing in your pocket dude. Both images are swamped with hideous noise... there's something seriously wrong. You blew it up
to 11 x 14 and framed it! That's a waste of dye, 154 square inches of paper and a frame. The only way possible to justify blowing it up is by blowing it up with explosives.

Sorry for the harsh crit mate, don't give up, but instead of wasting resources you need to be asking: "what's gone horribly wrong".

that looks more like bird poop than bird feathers. I don't know what lens you were using but a D850 is capable of a trillion percent better than this hideous mess.
