Two of the coolest birds I have....the barred owl and the pileated woodpecker. We have several owls that call to each other at night. Including a few episodes of creepy screeching which scares the heck out of my dogs. The pileated comes every day along with his family. I believe this photo may be the juvenile...not sure. It was taken last summer and this guy was very confused about how to get on the suet feeders. Dad came and showed him how. Fun thread....good idea. Thanks for starting it!

Oh I'd love to see a Painted Bunting at my feeder. You're so lucky!
I have black-capped chickadees and they are brave. They feed while I'm 6' away in my chair.

Unfortunately, the Bunting was only there for about 30 seconds.
Their bravery is one of the things I like about the chickadees.

Here on Long Island, NY, we see a lot of ospreys in the summer and it seems like the hawks take over their nests in the winter. I did capture a falcon last year at Jones Beach.
In Florida, I see ibises, cormorants, great blue herons and white herons but my favorite birds are pelicans.
But I’d love to see eagles & owls.

My take on two subjects. I invite all replies, especially additions of subject. I know how versatile a bunch we are and every region is different. Pics are certainly welcome.

What's the coolest backyard bird in your eyes? I'm going with woodpeckers (especially the piliated), flickers and nutatches.
Second runners up: thrushes and thrashers. There's something stealthy about the way they move.

How about the prettiest? Gotta love a cardinal, red or yellow. Finches come next along with indigo buntings.

So that's me, and it's based on living in an urban area in Lynchburg, Virginia. Hope to get an onslaught of replies because I think the thread has great potenial, redundant or not.

We are fortunate to have a large variety of birds, but this is my all time favorite.

Here in THE CITY, We get a lot of in my mind undesirable birds, sparrows and starlings and some others that look similar, occasionally Cardinals and Blue Jays, every so often in the distance a hawk, (on someones roof), now at the little house in the woods we get a variety of attractive birds, we don't feed as one neighbor feeds stray cats and the other feeds breadcrumbs to the birds, and any rodents that show up (not happy about that).

I get a wide variety here in Grants Pass, Southern Oregon. My hardest bird to capture was the Hermit Thrush...so hidden & shy & quick. I finally got him when he decided to pose in a ray of sun one cold winter day. I have the same issue with a Red Winged Blackbird that gives me an exposure problem with his dark black color! I see him every day but not a single decent pic!

Most dramatic are the Cooper's Hawks most every day & an American Kestrel. Recently I got a beautiful pic of an American Gold Finch, male, in my pink cherry blossoms.

I get Purple Finches, House Finches, Lesser & American Finches, Pine Siskins, Chickadees, Rufous & Anna's Hummers & I believe a Calliope Hummer. Black Headed Grosbeaks, Oak Titmice, Acorn. Downy, & Hairy Woodpeckers, and Northern Common Flickers, White & Red breasted Nuthatches, twice I saw a Western Tanager! A great Blue Heron in the pond along with Wood Ducks, Mallards, Ring Neck Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Teal Blue wings, Crows, Starlings, Audubon Yellow Rumped Warblers,

Common Yellow Throats, Western Spotted Towhees, Oregon Juncos, Red Shouldered Hawks (caught them mating!)
Cedar Waxwings, so pretty! Wild Turkeys, many Sparrows, White & Gold Crowned, House, Song Sparrow, and some more I have not yet positively identified. Oh yeah I had several sightings of a Red Breasted SapSucker! I spotted a Male Varied Thrush this winter, Eurasian & Mourning Doves, Stellar & Calif. Scrub Jays, Phew I am out of breath! Sorry it is so long....plus my wife saw a Western bluebird. Canadian Geese.

I live in SoCal near a saltwater bay and not far from the ocean. We have the usual assortment of doves, crows, sparrows, mocking birds, etc. but our pool seems to attract some of the other local species also, here are a couple for you. chase

One of the Florida favorites is the Florida Scrub Jay. We have a section of scrub habitat near us and the Jays are doing well. Many are banded from birth to monitor their movements. Beautiful, flighty but very friendly birds, maybe too friendly, one reason they and their habitat are protected.

All birds are neat, to be fair, I would have to say that I mostly like the ones with feathers!

Brave indeed! And Bold! Nuthatches and Black Capped Chickadees will do this in winter when food is scarce.

That's very cool. Who took the photos??

Wild turkeys in our back yard, pileated woodpecker visiting the old pine tree stump in our front, both rare visitors. Goldfinches, bluejays, cardinals for color. Birdfeeder faves are the chickadees, tufted titmouse, and nuthatches.

I know what you mean. But, the furry ones with claws and fangs can be awesome also. Bats eat a lot of bugs
